Quincy Promes has been imprisoned in Dubai for several days awaiting a decision on his extradition to the Netherlands. The footballer was detained on February 29 while passing through border control at the airport; He planned to fly with Spartak for a match with Zenit, but ended up staying in the United Arab Emirates. And it is unknown how long he will remain there and whether he will still be able to return to Russia.
What should Spartak do without Promes?
Who will Spartak replace Promes with? There are at least three options
We remember what happened since then: news about the accident, rap and imprisonment.
The reason for Promes’ detention at the airport was revealed the next day: the footballer fled the scene of the accident in the United Arab Emirates; In the country this is punishable by up to four years in prison. Baza later wrote that the accident occurred on January 15: Promes crashed into a bus and disappeared. Two days later, he returned to Moscow; At that time, the declaration against him as guilty of the accident had not yet passed all the checks and his guilt had not been proven, so Quincy was quietly released from the country.
Later on January 22, Promes returned to Dubai with the team to participate in the training camp. While he was there, the police identified the culprit of the accident and submitted documents to the court. When Promes tried to fly to St. Petersburg, he was not released because he was passing through the bases as a suspect in an accident. The footballer’s representatives asked to reconsider the case and a new trial date was set for March 5, but it was postponed for a week and the Dutchman himself was sent home with a ban on leaving the territory of the United Arab Emirates. Promes couldn’t think of anything better than to go to a nightclub with his new girlfriend and record a song with the following lines: “People say they are on my side, I don’t see them anymore because the judge gave me nine years.” . But I won’t shed a tear over this shit because I live without fear.”
He was not only brave, but very brave.

On March 11, the trial took place: Promes was found guilty, but as punishment he was only fined 10,000 dirhams (about 250,000 rubles). The footballer, however, still could not fly to Moscow; He was arrested again, but this time at the request of the Dutch prosecutor’s office.
“Following cooperation between the UAE and Dutch authorities, a 32-year-old man living in Moscow was arrested in Dubai,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement. — The arrest was made on the basis of a “red notice.” The Netherlands will demand the extradition of the detainee. According to several media outlets, the detainee lived in a luxury hotel in Dubai. However, he was arrested thanks to the efforts of the authorities of both countries. “It is not possible to provide further information at this time to avoid disrupting the ongoing investigation.”
A Red Notice is a request to law enforcement agencies around the world to locate and temporarily detain a person pending extradition, extradition or similar legal action. It is based on an arrest warrant or court order issued by the judicial authorities of the requesting country. Interpol member countries apply their own laws when deciding whether to arrest a person.
Promes’ lawyers, Sophie Hof and Robert Malevich, immediately issued a statement stating that on behalf of the footballer they had lodged an appeal against the Amsterdam court’s decision, but that the extradition procedure would now have to be completed in the Arab Emirates. Joined. and the decision in this regard would be made by an independent judge in Dubai. They also noted that the process can take a long time and its outcome is simply impossible to predict.
Football club “Spartak”
press service
“The lawyers and coach Quincy Promes notified the club of a change in the preventive measure against the footballer, who was detained in the United Arab Emirates. Promes’ defense will continue the process of appealing the verdict of the Amsterdam District Court related to the Dutch authorities’ request for his extradition to the Netherlands. We hope for a favorable result for our footballer. “The club will announce further actions regarding Promes as the situation evolves.”
Promes prepared well: first he fled the scene of the accident, although the only question was the amount of damage, then, instead of sitting quietly in Dubai, he went to party. Dubai-based lawyer Arash Zad told De Telegraaf about Quincy’s lack of seriousness about house arrest, saying “arrogant behavior is punished here.”
Grigory Telingater’s opinion on the matter:
If I had a Promes t-shirt, I would hide it far, far away in the closet.
Promes is detained at a police station near Dubai airport. Him eating rice with chicken and sitting with other prisoners.
The footballer was placed in a cell with other prisoners at Dubai Police Headquarters, where he will remain until the court makes a decision on extradition. De Telegraaf reports that the conditions in the prison are normal: the footballer eats rice and chicken and communicates with other prisoners. There are much worse places in the United Arab Emirates: according to Humans Rights Watch, the country has three detention centers where prisoners live in extremely poor conditions, so bad that one prisoner called the place “hell on earth.” where they are tortured for lack of sleep in overcrowded cells.
The Netherlands hopes that a decision will be made in the near future on the extradition of Promes, sentenced to 7.5 years in prison, but the process may drag on. De Telegraaf writes that the footballer’s lawyers may file ongoing appeals, which will delay the decision for a year.

Lawyer Andrei Knyazev, however, believes that the case is unlikely to drag on for that period. “Up to six months, yes,” he told the Championship. “At the same time, Promes can request political asylum in accordance with the law for crimes such as violent or drug-related crimes. Therefore, they are unlikely to last several years. The sooner you get in, the sooner you get out. It is still unknown where detention conditions are best. In Holland he can begin serving his sentence, counting on parole in the future. And in the United Arab Emirates they will sit and wait. Therefore, Promes can consent to voluntary extradition.”
It is unknown whether it will be six months or a year, but one thing is clear: making a decision on extradition takes a long time. At the very least, because first the Netherlands must present all documents with exhaustive evidence of the guilt of the person to be extradited, then they must be studied in the United Arab Emirates and only then a decision must be made. Now Ramadan is underway, which only slows down all the processes.
So it looks like Promes will have to eat rice and chicken for at least a couple more months.
