Russia versus Belarus: who is stronger? 3 main intrigues of the last biathlon start

Tatyana Postnikova April 12, 2024, 10:45 Moscow time

Great duels and a Globe draw await us in Murmansk.

Today, April 12, the Commonwealth Cup finals begin in Murmansk. This tournament closes the season, and therefore takes on special importance. In addition, there are many questions that Russian biathlon has not yet answered. For example, who is cooler: Eduard Latypov or the Belarusian Anton Smolsky. And for women: Shevchenko or Slivko?

Confrontation between countries

The Commonwealth Cup is a tournament in which the fight between Russians and Belarusians is extremely intense. The protagonists of this confrontation are Eduard Latypov and Anton Smolsky. So, in Murmansk, biathletes expect a fight. In the Commonwealth Cup, Latypov and Smolsky fought hard throughout the season. And so far the advantage is on Anton’s side. The Belarusian has six personal gold medals. Eduardo’s is more modest: one gold, two silver and one bronze.

At the Commonwealth Cup, Latypov more than once missed the gold medals:

“I do not know what happened”. Latypov deprived himself of gold in mass exit from the Commonwealth Cup

However, in the general classification of the tournament the differences between the biathletes are minimal. Smolsky leads the total, but Latypov is only 25 points behind him. It’s a similar story in other classifications. In sprints Eduard takes first place, Anton loses him by 3 points, in pursuits the Russian surpasses the Belarusian by 11 points. In the mass starts, Smolsky was at the top of the standings, and Latypov was only in third place with a difference of 39 points.

Of course, in the last stage of the Commonwealth Cup we will have a tough fight for the Globes. And it is still unclear who will emerge victorious.

Showdown in women’s competitions.

For women, the best in each discipline will also be determined in the final races. So far, five athletes are competing for this title! Now Victoria Slivko leads the overall standings, Tamara Derbusheva is behind her with 16 points, and Irina Kazakevich is 30 points behind. Natalia Shevchenko is in fourth place with a difference of 56 points, and Anastasia Goreeva is in fifth place, losing 88 points. The differences between the athletes are small, which means that any of the girls can become the winner.

Great interview with Svetlana Sleptsova about our biathlon:

“Byo liked the photo and that’s enough!” Sleptsova told how she lives without biathlon

It’s a similar story in discipline testing. Five people will compete for the Globe in the sprints: Irina Kazakevich (322 points), Tamara Derbusheva (318 points), Victoria Slivko (304), Natalia Shevchenko (303) and Anastasia Shevchenko (289). They will face each other and play against “MHG” in their objectives. While Tamara is in the lead, Irina is behind her by three points, Victoria and Natalia by nine and Anastasia by 34. In the mass starts the main fight between Slivko and Goreeva is expected. The athletes are separated by 19 points.

The title of the best biathlete in Russia.

However, the main duel in Murmansk will take place between Victoria Slivko and Natalia Shevchenko. Throughout the season, biathletes fight among themselves in every race, in every competition, in every tournament. Slivko completed 39 starts and won 17 medals: eight gold, four silver and five bronze. Of the total prizes, only three were received in relay races. Shevchenko ran 37 races, since she did not go to the MLBB, and she added 18 medals to her treasure: 11 gold, two silver and five bronze. At the same time, four prizes were won in team races.

We find out who is stronger: Slivko or Shevchenko:

The duel between the best biathletes in Russia is coming to an end. Only one will be the strongest!

As a result, before the start of the Commonwealth Cup stage, biathletes closely follow each other in the RBU ranking. The leader is Shevchenko, but Slivko is in second place. And only six points separate the athletes! All personal races of the stage will count towards the SBR qualification: sprint, pursuit and mass start. It is they who will decide the question of who will receive the official title of the best biathlete of Russia.
