Karsten Warholm surrendered to Rai Benjamin’s attacks.
There have already been many surprises and sensations in the athletics competitions at the Paris Olympic Games. And the 14th day of the Games gave me another one.
Olympic champion and world champion from Tokyo 2021, Norwegian hurdler Carsten Warholm, was considered the favourite in the 400m final, but suffered a crushing defeat. First up was Rai Benjamin.
Although it is worth saying that this result did not come as a surprise. Literally before the Olympics, at the Diamond League stage in Monaco, which actually became a rehearsal for the Games, Warholm lost to the same Benjamin. True, the fight there turned out to be much more intense – the judges had to watch the photo finish.
Benjamin defeated Warholm just before the Olympics:

And in the Olympic final, the American’s victory was much more convincing. In the first few metres, Warholm seemed to be in the lead: the first barriers were easy for him. In a certain sense, it was also psychologically easier for the Norwegian: he ran along the track alongside Benjamin and saw his opponent’s back running along the outer radius. But that didn’t help either.
When we reached the finish line, it was clear that Benjamin was in first place. And at the last hurdle, it was clear that he would not give up on victory: he overcame the hurdle with ease and air, but for Karsten it was already a bit difficult.

The American finished confidently first. The Norwegian, who was considered the favourite by all, is second. And third is Brazilian Alison Dos Santos. It was this trio that collected medals in Tokyo, the only difference being that Warholm came first. But now the celebration has reached the streets of America.
