The quarter-final pairings have already been decided at Wimbledon! And one of the most interesting matches will be the duel between Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev. For the Italian and the Russian this meeting will be the third this year.
Sinner (world number one) and Medvedev (5) met for the last time before the 2022 semi-finals: then the tennis players played the quarter-finals in Vienna and the Russian won easily (6-4, 6:2). In total, Yannick and Daniil met 11 times, and the latter leads this difficult confrontation (6-5).
In the 2024 season, the players will compete for the third time. Their first match was in the final of the Australian Open, when in a difficult five-set match, after coming back from 0-2 in the games, the Italian took the victory (3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6 :4, 6:3). The second meeting took place in the fight to reach the decisive phase of the Miami Masters, then Yannick also turned out to be stronger (6-1, 6-2).
Overall, Sinner won the last five matches in his confrontation with Medvedev, having lost six matches in a row before that. All these meetings took place with difficulty. Yannick and Daniil will meet for the first time on grass, so this match may bring surprises to each of the rivals.

The supercomputer has named the top favourites for Wimbledon 2024. There’s a Russian on the list!
The tennis players have already spoken about their upcoming encounter. Both agreed on one thing: their quarter-final match would not be a success for either of them.
“I still believe that every match has its own story. I felt like in Australia we had two different fights in one fight. It will be difficult for both of us. I trained with him earlier in the week. He played very well, it will be difficult. I am looking forward to meeting you, it is a big challenge for me. This is what I train for. I hope it will be a good match,” Sinner said at a press conference.
“He plays better, makes fewer mistakes. When he first appeared on the tour, everyone was not only surprised, but also impressed by how strong his stroke was. He ran fast and hit strong shots from every position on the court. But I didn’t hit them much and that’s why I lost some matches. As soon as he made fewer mistakes, it became very difficult for anyone to beat him, not just me. That’s why he’s world number one. If I’m not mistaken, statistically I usually play better against top rackets than against other players. Let’s see if this helps me against Yannick. (The last time Daniil played with the world’s number one racket at the 2023 US Open, in the semi-finals the Russian defeated Carlos Alcaraz 7:6, 6:1, 3:6, 6:3.)
“His serve has also improved a lot. Small details mean a lot in tennis. It is more difficult to play against him now than before. But the matches were equal, I had opportunities. I will try to use them better this time,” Medvedev said at Wimbledon.

On grass, Daniil and Yannick have similar results. Each has a title on this surface. At Wimbledon, both reached the semi-finals, which was the case last season.
This year in London, Sinner played three sets with Miomir Kecmanovic (6-1, 6-4, 6-2) and Ben Shelton (6-2, 6-4, 7-6), and also played four matches with Yannick Hanfman (6:3, 6:4, 3:6, 6:3) and Matteo Berrettini (7:6, 7:6, 2:6, 7:6). Medvedev spent slightly less time on court. He needed three games to defeat Alexander Kovacevic (6:3, 6:4, 6:2), as well as four sets to overcome Alexander Müller (6:7, 7:6, 6:4, 7:5) and Jan-Lennard Struff (6:1, 6:3, 4:6, 7:6). In the fourth round, the Russian played only 40 minutes, as his opponent Grigor Dimitrov retired due to injury after eight games.
And now, in this twelfth head-to-head meeting, Yannick and Daniil will compete for a ticket to the semi-finals, the defence of last year’s points and a crucial victory. Don’t forget to follow this and other Wimbledon matches on the “Championship”!
