Six Spanish tennis players have been sanctioned for long periods for their involvement in match-fixing. This was reported on the website of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).

The players had previously been convicted in Spain in a larger case related to organized crime, which is still ongoing. All pleaded guilty to corruption and received two-year suspended sentences and fines.

Mark Fornell Mestres (highest ATP rating is 236), Marse Vidri (562), as well as unranked Carlos Ortega, Jaime Ortega, Marcos Torralbo and Pedro Bernabé Franco, were all sanctioned.

As a result, ITIA disqualified Mestres for 22 years and 6 months and fined him $250,000 (of which $200,000 was conditional). Vidri was suspended for 15 years and fined $15,000, Carlos Ortega – 15 years and $150,000 ($140,000 – conditional), Tarralbo – 15 years and $100,000 ($75,000 – conditional), Franco – 15 years and $100,000 ($75,000 conditional), Jaime Ortega for 7.5 years and $100,000 ($90,000 conditional).

Disqualification means that they are prohibited from playing or attending any tennis event sanctioned by any international governing body or national association. They are also prohibited from training.
