SKA is at the bottom. What is happening with the greats of St. Petersburg?

Date: July 13, 2024 Time: 00:08:39

The start of the KHL regular season is now behind us, so we can draw some first conclusions about who was well prepared for the season and who was not. The main surprise could be the poor start of CSKA, which now barely remains in the top eight of the Western Conference, but has even surpassed its Moscow counterpart, SKA.

After seven games, the St. Petersburg team is in the penultimate place in the conference (behind only Vityaz), and in the entire KHL it is fourth from the bottom (also ahead of Admiral and Neftekhimik). And all this against the backdrop of the league’s worst losing streak: five in a row. Roman Rotenberg’s team was consistently slapped in the face by Torpedo, Lokomotiv, Spartak, Dynamo and Siberia.

The last time something like this happened with SKA was in November 2021, when the team lost six times in a row. The most interesting thing is that despite the obvious difficulties, Roman Rotenberg does not see any problems, declaring a good atmosphere in the team and the need for patience. At the same time, there are also excuses for some inadequate work of judges, a complicated schedule, lack of teamwork, execution and much more.

And it’s okay if this is just a game for the audience, implying that everything is fine with them. Even so, the existing problems must be recognized; Otherwise, how are they going to be resolved? Ignoring and remaining silent is a bad option. It is clear that the team has undergone a quite notable change in its composition, even in the leaders. It takes time to get used to, but what did you do in preseason?

The problems with the implementation of the majority come from the same place: the lack of a high level of mutual understanding between SKA hockey players, as well as undeveloped options for playing the puck in such situations. 14.7% is sixth since the bottom of the league. At the same time, the team has a lot of opportunities: the St. Petersburg team ranks third in the KHL in terms of time spent on the power play (55:47). It is also worth paying attention: SKA had 32 eliminations, the sixth best result in the league.

Furthermore, the problems are evident not only for the team as a whole, but also for the players in particular. The main goalkeeper Johan Mattsson had a reliability percentage of 95.4% in the playoffs last season in the troubled Avtomobilist, and now only 92.3%, which by the standards of the best KHL club is far from the best figures . Among defenders, only Alexander Nikishin is good, but he remains the only defender who managed to score points this season. This is simply puzzling, because we are talking about a contender for the Gagarin Cup.

Among the forwards there is no one who can lead the team: the top scorers, Vladimir Alistrov and Sergei Tolchinsky, have only four points in seven games. And if there are no doubts about the young striker, then the former leader of Avangard clearly had other expectations. Similar claims against Brendan Laipsic. But the Canadian usually opens up in the playoffs, so we’ll see later.

Well, the apotheosis of everything is Alexander Galchenyuk. The controversial forward came to the KHL as a star, playing 654 games in the NHL and scoring 354 points, 146 of which were goals. He sounds awesome. But in our league he seems to be on vacation: two pitiful points, not a single goal and the worst indicator of the club’s usefulness: minus 5.

Do all those who claim that SKA has no problems still believe it? The “army men” of St. Petersburg have a lot of work ahead of them to become a real hockey machine again, but to do this they must first admit that there are difficulties and start working hard on them.
