The career of Golovin and Alexey Miranchuk in the national team began with the match against Belarus. It was lovely!

“I am convinced that we will play very well against Austria. If, of course, you support us”, these words from Vitaly Mutko after the match against Belarus in 2015 are a true reflection of that dark time for the Russian team. When it was customary to pretend that everything was fine, although in reality it was bad. Russia failed to qualify for Euro 2016 and before the most important match against Austria, brotherly Belarus was invited to Moscow for a friendly match. Even then it could all have been over for Fabio Capello. But the game was saved by two debutants: Alexey Miranchuk and Alexander Golovin. Surprisingly, the meeting took place on June 7. Now, exactly nine years later, the same match will take place in Minsk.

Many probably remember the last period of Capello’s work in Russia. When they talked a lot about money and little about football. In reality, there was simply no reason for positive evaluations. The Russian team looked weak. And this is a fact that even the coach himself did not particularly discuss. In 2015, the team, thanks to a technical defeat against Montenegro, took third place in the group, which gave nothing. Ahead is the most important match against Austria and, among them, two friendly matches against neighbors Kazakhstan and Belarus.

Almost no one attended the first meeting. Now this is harder to imagine. The match against Kazakhstan took place in Khimki, where just over four thousand spectators attended. But what kind of people took to the field? Dmitry Efremov, Igor Portnyagin, Alexey Kozlov, Denis Davydov. Fabio, in his last configuration, loved to experiment. Naturally, this was very difficult to watch. The match ended 0-0 and went almost unnoticed.

The best Belarusian legionnaires in the history of the RPL:

Belarus’s favorite foreign players in Russian football. Who was most memorable?

Then June 7, 2015 and the match against Belarus. At first, the RFU was criticized for bringing even such a rival to Moscow and not to the regions. But the managers simply shrugged their shoulders: they say that the head coach, who feels more comfortable in the capital, decides. Although very few people returned to the game: a little more than five thousand for the Otkritie Arena, a very sad result.

And midway through the second half, the fans were already spitting at the team’s performance and the result. In the 66th minute, Russia trailed 1:2 and apparently had no intention of recovering. But then, almost like in blockbuster movies with lots of computer graphics, superheroes appeared on the field. And everything changed. They turned out to be two 19-year-old boys who were not yet familiar to the general public (and it is she who watches the national team’s matches): Lokomotiv midfielder Alexei Miranchuk and CSKA player Alexander Golovin. The first left 25 minutes before the final whistle, the second 15 minutes before. Not only did the result change, but more importantly, the speed and quality of the game changed. Many people have noticed it. It was a pleasure to see the team.

In the 77th minute, Oleg Ivanov crossed the area from the flank, Golovin deftly took the ball on his chest and shot with his second touch. Just a teacher. Six minutes later, a quick attack involving Golovin, Alexander Kerzhakov and Oleg Shatov passed to Miranchuk. All that remains is to complete it. The young players received no praise from Capello after the game. The Italian highlighted the character of the entire team.

Although it is really rare that two young people, for whom this is the first match with the Russian national team, score goals. This had only happened once: in 1995, Mukhdin Mukhamadiev and Valery Kechinov scored in their debut match for Russia. True, both of them could not leave a significant mark on the history of the national team.

And Miranchuk and Golovin almost reached the achievement of Dmitry Sychev, who at that time was the youngest scorer in the history of the Russian national team: the forward scored at 18 years and 205 days in the match against Yugoslavia. Golovin – at 19 years and 8 days, Miranchuk – at 19 years and 233 days. But they both outplayed Kerzhakov, who scored the fourth goal against Belarus.

Alejandro Golovin

Russian national team midfielder

“I didn’t know I would go out on the field. Everything was unexpected. Many thanks to Fabio Capello, who gave me a chance. I understand that this is progress. Was your debut a success? Yes, I scored a goal that allowed me to equalize the score. But there is still a lot to do to reach the World Cup at home. I will try. There is no question of any “starburst”. I haven’t done anything to be a hero yet. I have a normal attitude towards all this commotion, I calmly perceive what they write, I try not to pay attention to it.”

A week later the team played against Austria. Miranchuk came out in the second half, Golovin never appeared on the field. Russia lost 0-1, four points behind second place, and Capello was soon fired. Vitaly Mutko finally managed all the processes again and invited Leonid Slutsky, who miraculously dragged the team to the final stage of Euro 2016.

How to solve an important problem for the Russian national team:

Karpin named the main problem of the Russian team – the center of defense. But it can definitely be solved.

Nine years have passed. There are no selections. And the RFU does not have a wide geographical range of opponents. Belarus… well, the game in Minsk… no problem. But we can say with confidence: it was this rival that launched the careers of Miranchuk and Golovin in the Russian national team, who have been playing in European leagues for a long time, but do not ignore the national team.

Alexey Miranchuk

Russian national team midfielder

“I remember my first goal. Then we won and now we play away from home in Minsk. I hope it turns out to be a kind and good game with moments. If I can distinguish myself, of course I will be happy. But, I repeat, the main thing is to show teamwork and show beautiful football.”
