In the 90s, so many interesting animated series were released that there was not enough time to watch them all. So, some are “Rocker Mice from Mars” fans, others are “Pinky and the Brain” fans. Although some works were considered mandatory: if you do not follow them, you will not be able to have a conversation in the yard.
“X-Men” was right on the must-see list. The animated series looked luxurious, surprised with dangerous enemies like the Guardians, and made you care more about the love triangle around Jean Gray than the resulting two. What can we say about the screensaver and the music that is impossible to forget!
The show ended in 1997 and, oddly enough, returned for a sequel 27 years later. On March 20, the first two episodes of X-Men 97 were released on Disney+.

“X-Men 97”: where to watch?
The animated series is shown on Disney+. On March 20, the first two episodes were released, then one per week. The season finale is scheduled for May 15. There are no official voiceovers or translations in Russian.

As cool as when I was a kid
It’s hard not to fall in love with X-Men 97. Consider the clever cheating technique: the animated series opens with the same screensaver set to the same music. For a total immersion in the era, the only thing missing is the late Volodarsky and his phrase “Radioactive people.” This alone is enough to make you feel like a child and clap your hands with joy.

The entire animated series is imbued with that nostalgia. The heroes look the same as they did in the ’90s, Wolverine is still in love with Jean Grey, Gambit still makes cracking jokes. The plot also continues the 1997 arc: Dr. Xavier is no longer with us, the mutants feel lost, and people are afraid of their abilities after the riots.
Die-hard X-Men fans will be delighted, but casual viewers will be perplexed. To remember what is happening, you should at least watch a video that retells the plot. But once you immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the animated series, there is no turning back.

The first few episodes are incredibly intense, no one wastes time preparing for them. You’ll watch a fight with half-dead Guardians, worry about pregnant Jean Grey, laugh at Gambit’s antics, clutch your heart when an important character loses his powers, and admire Magneto as he tries to follow Xavier’s principles. This is only a part of the important events that are set in a modest period of time.
At the same time, the authors of the cartoon maintained a perfect balance. Each episode has action, drama, jokes, twists and everything that made X-Men a masterpiece. No wonder the sequel is so exciting.

There are questions about the panache and the persecution of mutants.
In general, the cartoon looks great. The artists maintained their signature style, conveyed the desired atmosphere, and generally pleased fans. But in some places they did not have enough budget or time. Take Jubilee’s dance in the first episode: at first it’s smooth, then the lack of frames catches your eye, making the image a little edgy. Fortunately, such moments are rare and spoil the impressions.
Another drawback is the arc about the persecution of mutants. “X-Men” was originally about outcasts who fight for the right to be themselves and are always misunderstood. Even the great and terrible Magneto acted badly just because he was tired of human tyranny.
Unfortunately, we have already seen this plot in the animated series, the classic films with Hugh Jackman and the reboot with McAvoy and Fassbender. Bigots have memorized the ideas of tolerance, so watching people revert to being oppressors is exhausting. However, in the second episode the mutants seem to close this topic and address a more interesting problem.

“X-Men 97”: is it worth watching?
Yeah! Even new viewers will enjoy the animated series, and fans who watched the X-Men in the ’90s will generally be delighted.
X-Men 97 Score: 8 out of 10
Appreciated
The plot is very intense, the sequel evokes a feeling of nostalgia, and the visuals are generally excellent.
I dont like him
In places the picture lacks frames and the arc about mutant oppression is tired.
