The European Table Tennis Union will challenge the decision to restore the Russians

The European Table Tennis Union will challenge the restoration of Russian clubs in CAS, said lawyer Mikhail Prokopets, who is involved in the process. “Now no one can say how the situation will develop further,” he added.

The European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) will challenge before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) the decision of the ETTU Appeal Commission to reinstate Russian clubs to the Champions League. This was stated to TASS by Mikhail Prokopets, an employee of the SILA law firm, which represents the interests of the Russian teams.

On April 27, the ETTU Appeal Commission decided to reinstate Fakel-Gazprom and UMMC clubs in the 2021/22 Champions League. As stated on the SILA website, the commission recognized the ETTU’s decision to remove the Russian teams as discriminatory.

Table Tennis Federation suspended Russia from tournaments due to Ukraine

“Now no one can say how the situation will develop further, but the decision says that the results of the tournament should be reviewed and the second semi-final match should be held with the participation of Russian clubs. And then Borussia will play one of our teams. You won’t have to play anything again, you just need to finish the tournament,” said Prokopets.

According to him, the ETTU will appeal the decision of its own appeal committee to the CAS. “For us, the main thing is that now in two international federations the decisions to remove Russian athletes are called discriminatory. Other sports should follow the example of table tennis and bobsled,” said Prokopets.

On March 3, ETTU suspended Russian clubs from participating in European competitions. Fakel-Gazprom and UMMC were supposed to play in the semifinal of the Champions League. On March 21, ETTU recognized Borussia Düsseldorf, who won their semi-final, as the winner of the tournament.

ETTU expressed its disappointment with the decision of the organization’s appeal committee. “While the ETTU does not wish to penalize athletes for the actions of their governments, the decision to suspend the Russian clubs was made to protect the safety of athletes and ensure fair competition, in accordance with IOC and ITTF recommendations. . The ETTU Executive Board will meet to discuss the next steps after the Appeals Panel’s decision,” ETTU said.

On April 8, the International Luge Federation (FIL) arbitration court granted the appeal of the Russian Luge Federation (FSSR) to withdraw Russian athletes from international tournaments. However, the FIL said it would not lift the restrictions on Russian athletes despite the referee’s verdict. They pointed out that the leadership of the federation and the legal department will seek solutions to the situation caused by the decision of the arbitral tribunal, through a possible change in the statutes of the FIL. This topic will be included in the agenda of the FIL congress, which will take place on June 18 and 19 in Riga.
