The Football Association of Ukraine issued a statement about the fact that Russian referee Sergei Karasev was invited to the UEFA referees’ meeting, which will take place in September in Switzerland.
It should be noted that the letter from the Ukrainian representatives of the sports organization was addressed to the Secretary General of the European Football Union Theodore Theodoridis.
“We are convinced that this case is unacceptable in the context of UEFA’s general policy towards the citizens of the Russian Federation, and we believe that the above is the result of a misunderstanding. However, taking this opportunity, we ask you to comment on this, since any episode of a possible relaxation of sanctions against Russia is critically sensitive for all of us, ”writes the UAF press service.
We add that Karasev began his refereeing career in 1995. FIFA has been a referee since 2010, and after three years of activity, he entered the elite category of UEFA referees. During his career, he has refereed World and European Championship matches, as well as the 2021 UEFA Super Cup.
Since February last year, Russian national teams and clubs have been suspended from international competitions under the auspices of UEFA and FIFA.
