The fourth season of “The Boys” ended epically: drama and passions at their peak

On July 18, the fourth season of “The Boys” ended. The finale didn’t answer many questions and in some places made me cringe with stupidity, but it was still amazing. There has never been such darkness and intensity of passion in the series. What exactly happened in episode eight?

Let the carnage begin!

The fourth season of The Boys has many problems. The main one is the state of zugzwang that all the heroes are in. They simply couldn’t do anything meaningful without getting hurt.

Homelander didn’t kill Butcher because he was building a relationship with his son. Victoria Newman didn’t blow the boys’ heads off because she had incriminating evidence. The Seven didn’t take over the country because any careless step would lead to excessive chaos. Such a difficult situation reduced the degree of madness and turned the battle with the evil supers into something like a game of chess.

Kimiko’s arc didn’t have any clear development.

Another drawback was the personal problems that engulfed each hero. Take, for example, the arcs of the Frenchman and Kimiko: we were immersed in the dark past of the couple and were unpleasantly surprised by stupid phrases in the spirit of “We can’t be together.” At that moment, the viewer, who has been following the characters for five years, asked the question: “Why the hell can’t you?”

Even showrunner Eric Kripke didn’t have an answer. At the end of the season, he just erases all suffering and lefty. So why were arcs about Frenchie and Kimiko’s past needed? Why did they come up with boring episodes with a prison? Nobody knows.

The series has also lost its sense of taste in political statements. Previously, the writers skillfully made fun of both the left and the right, but now “The Boys” has become monstrously simple and, as a result, has lost its satirical charm.

Do the negative aspects make the fourth season bad? No! All thanks to the plot, which took a crazy turn towards the end. The heroes never found themselves in such a bleak and desperate situation. The most valuable thing is that the tension is achieved through dialogues, internal tensions and unexpected twists. Victory from defeat is always separated by the appearance of an important character, an altercation, and it seems surprisingly logical.

Unfortunately, the moment passions heat up to the limit and the zugzwang turns into a one-move checkmate, the season is over. That’s why saying goodbye to “The Boys” for a couple of years is painful and a bit offensive. Still, I want to see the end of the season sooner, preferably now.

Sister Sage really turned out to be smart.

If Eric Kripke bounced back after a bad start and created a similar feeling in the audience, it means that he has succeeded. His “Boys” are still good!

What happens in episode eight?

Hugh has no idea that Starlight has been replaced. He has a great time with the girl and even proposes to her, albeit at the suggestion of his chosen one. Between sex and stealing evidence, the fake Starlight meets the real one, this is necessary to maintain the disguise. The villain points out her sins to the heroine, tells her about her engagement and makes the poor girl cry.

The actress perfectly played two different characters.

Homelander finds a photo of his son with Butcher and loses his temper. After an argument with his son, he breaks down during a news show starring Victoria Newman. The villain says live on television that the Vice President is a superhero, and proves it by shooting him in the eye, which doesn’t harm Victoria.

When the truth is revealed, the future President Singer hides in the bunker, where Huey, MM, Kimiko and the fake Starlight also gather. Huey notices many oddities in his beloved’s behavior and assumes that she has been replaced. As a result, a massacre begins in the bunker.

The politician would have died if the real Starlight had not come to the rescue. Through severe injuries, the heroine escaped captivity and strangled the killer even without strength. Starlight is angry that it took so long for Huey to recognize the deception, but in time, anger gives way to mercy.

Not even Kimiko could defeat the fake Starlight.

At the CIA hospital, Butcher meets Ryan. The characters communicate cordially, but then Grace tells the boy the truth about Homelander and his crimes. She sees Ryan as a weapon against the leader of the Seven.

The upset boy wants to leave, but Grace won’t let him out. The hospital turns out to be a trap: pressing the red button on the wall will fill the room with gas and everyone will fall asleep. Grace reaches for the button, but Ryan pushes her against the wall and kills her. Butcher then realizes that the boy won’t help him and sides with his imaginary friend Joe. He yearns for slaughter and the death of all supers.

Victoria Newman realizes that things are going badly for her, so she makes a deal with The Boys. They agree to join forces and kill Homelander. Butcher interrupts the negotiations: after making a deal with the dark side, he reveals his abilities. Tentacles fly out of Butcher’s chest and tear Newman to pieces. He then takes the virus to the supers, which the Frenchman had just completed.

Newman is done.

Homelander orders the killing of all Vought employees with information about the Seven. Even Ashley would be killed, but she overhears the dark conversations, injects herself with the V drug, and presumably escapes.

After a failed assassination attempt and Newman’s death, Homelander falls into a depression. The melancholy is interrupted by Sister Sage. It turns out that she foresaw everything and even made his dismissal part of the plan. In the bunker, President Singer promised to kill Newman; these words were filmed and posted on the Internet. As a result, after Victoria’s actual death, the politician is arrested.

A supporter of Homelander is appointed interim president. With his support, the leader of the Seven declares war on the Starlighters. The boys want to escape, but they don’t have time: everyone except Starlight and Butcher, who have regained their strength, is captured. I am especially sad for Kimiko and Frenchie. The heroes became a couple and eventually kissed. When Frenchie is caught, the girl screams: “No!” It turns out that she can still talk.
