We present a summary of the main events in the world of hockey for June 13, 2023.
“Ovi is one of the best forwards, why should he play better defensively?”
Czech journalist Dragomir Kvasnichki shared his opinion about Russian Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin.
“If Alexander Ovechkin continues to score goals at the same pace as before, before the current contract expires in 2026, he will become the greatest scorer in NHL history. The Russian striker for the Washington Capitals has long since joined the ranks of the greatest legends of the prestigious league. However, he outshines many of them.
Of course, critics have always loved to bash on his defensive play and “smart pressure” on him to improve his defensive performance. And why the hell should he do that when he’s been one of the NHL’s biggest offensive aces for nearly 20 years?
We can safely say that he is a purely offensive hockey player, but in his case this is only a plus. Let’s recap a bit and let the numbers do the talking. Ovechkin was the regular season top scorer nine times. No one did it more often. The legendary Bobby Hull did it seven times. Ovi managed to score at least 50 goals nine times in one season, and if it weren’t for the shortening of the 2019/2020 season, he would have reached this mark even then.
Since the 2005/2006 season, when the “Russian tsar” entered the NHL, some of the players managed to break the 50-goal barrier in the regular season only 31 times; Ovechkin conquered this mark nine times. Only four other guys have done it more than once: Leon Draisaitl, Steven Stamkos, Dani Heatley and Ilya Kovalchuk. Only Draisaitl did this more than twice.
And one more thing to remember: Ovechkin is 37 years old. Outside of a sporting context, he is still a man in his prime, but as a professional athlete he is on a downward curve. He probably doesn’t score 50 goals every season anymore, but he can still have three seasons ahead at a decent level, ”Isport.cz quotes Kwasnichka.
Moscow “Dynamo” named the name of the new CEO
Sergey Sushko has been appointed to the post of General Director of Dynamo Moscow. This decision was made in a general assembly of the founders of the blue and white.
“Today, at a meeting of the club’s founding council, Sergey Anatolyevich Sushko was approved for the post of general director. This is an experienced specialist who has been in hockey for a long time and knows how to achieve results in different areas. I note that Sergei Anatolyevich knows Dynamo Moscow well. We hope that the full understanding between the club management and the team will bear fruit. We wish Sergey Anatolyevich good luck and hope for the best results from him!” – quotes the words of the chairman of the board of directors of HC Dynamo Viktor Voronin, the official website of the club.
Sushko served for four years as the general manager of a Brest hockey club, which he helped get promoted: the team moved from Extraliga B to Extraliga. Then the specialist was recognized as the best leader in the league. For the past two seasons, Sushko worked at Dynamo Minsk, holding the post of team leader and heading the board of directors of the clubs participating in the ice hockey federation of Belarus. At the same time, the specialist was a member of the board of directors of the Continental Hockey League.

In Sweden, the Club wants to impose a ban on playing for those who were in the KHL after the start of the special operation
Swedish club Brunhes is going to impose a lifetime ban from playing for the team on hockey players who played in the KHL after the start of a special operation in Ukraine.
“If you played in the KHL after the start of the special operation (the wording was changed in accordance with the official position of the Russian Federation) for any reason, you will never be able to play in Brunhes.
Such a proposal was presented to the annual meeting and supported by the Brunes board, which wants to make a more long-term political decision than the basic principles of the association, ”Gefle Dagblad quotes the words of the statement.
It should be noted that the decision has not yet been made and will only be discussed. Furthermore, it is noted that the ban applies to players who played in the Kontinental Hockey League only in the 2021/2022 season and then returned to Sweden.

New York Rangers Name Peter Laviolette as Head Coach
Former Washington Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette has taken a similar position with the New York Rangers. This was reported by the team’s press service on the official website.
The specialist became a replacement for Gerard Gallant, who left the Rangers after being knocked out of the Stanley Cup in the first round. The Rangers, who built a strong roster and traded for Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrick Kane, lost the Stanley Cup Opening Series to the New Jersey Devils in seven games, 3-4.
Keep in mind that previously, the top favorite for the New York head coach job was former Nashville Predators mentor John Hines. Recall that Laviolette, 58, left Washington after an unsuccessful regular season. The Capitals did not make the playoffs.
