The student coach will lead the Lakers and LeBron to the title. What’s going on?

Date: July 14, 2024 Time: 14:31:12

Today, famous insider Adrian Wojnarowski surprised all NBA fans with sensational news. The Los Angeles Lakers are preparing an offer for Connecticut student team coach Dan Hurley. It turns out that Rob Pelinka and Jeannie Buss considered Hurley as the leading candidate from the beginning of the search for a new coach. This is surprising, because this name has never appeared in any insider story before. Among the possible contenders mentioned were Sam Cassell, Mike Malone’s assistant David Adelman, and Mind Your Game podcast host and friend of LeBron James, JJ Redick.

For weeks, reports have surfaced that the Lakers have been granted permission to interview several candidates. The journalists focused on the mentioned candidates and actively discussed who would be the best choice. In recent weeks, the person who has been talked about the most has been JJ Redick, a man with no coaching experience whose tactical knowledge was made known to the general public thanks to a podcast with LeBron. Some even raised conspiracy theories that James created this project specifically so that, to Redick’s knowledge, former Lakers coach Darwin Ham would look worse and be fired and replaced by J.J.

In response to the allegations, LeBron’s representatives have repeatedly stated that James is not involved in the coaching search process. There were also indications in these statements that the King was disappointed that the Lakers were unable to bring in Tyronn Lue at that time and therefore decided not to interfere further with the process.

The intrigue continued because it was hard to believe that Los Angeles could sign Redick. I think a lot of people came up with the headlines that would immediately appear in the press. And the meme that LeBron is a general manager would go viral again. But this does not seem to have happened. There is a 99% chance the new coach will be Dan Hurley.

For those who don’t follow college basketball, this appointment may seem surprising and confusing. But I think anyone who watched the last March Madness knows what kind of person he is. Let’s get to know him better.

The 51-year-old specialist was born into a basketball family. His father, Bob Hurley Sr., is the legendary coach of St. Antonio High School. In 2011, he reached the 1,000 career victory mark, becoming just the 10th coach to accomplish that feat. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010, becoming the third high school coach in history to receive that honor. And for good reason, as he has 26 state championships in a 39-year career and has recorded five undefeated seasons.

Dan’s brother, Bob Hurley Jr., was a two-time NCAA champion at Duke. Bobby also played in the NBA, where he lasted five years. Following his playing career, he followed in his father’s footsteps and has been coaching at Arizona State since 2015.

Dan played with his father at St. Anthony, then five years in college. However, he never made it to the NBA. Despite this, he was respected for his work ethic on the court and his high basketball IQ. That’s why he also dedicated himself to training, starting by working as his father’s assistant for a year.

He then began his coaching career in high school basketball and gained recognition in the early 2000s as a coach at St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in New Jersey, Dan’s home state. Under his leadership, the school achieved national success, winning numerous tournaments and producing future NBA players such as JR Smith.

Since 2010, Dan moved to the student level and became a mentor to Wagner. For two years under his leadership, the team significantly improved its results, attracting the attention of more prestigious programs. By the way, it was there that Bobby Hurley helped his brother as an assistant. In 2012, Dan managed the Rhode Island team, where he took it to a new level: repeat participation in March Madness and victory in the Atlantic Conference.

With each new job, Dan took an important step forward. This happened in 2018, when he was leading the team at the University of Connecticut, one of the most prestigious basketball universities in the United States. True, Hurley greeted the team in an extremely sad state, and fans could only sadly remember Kemba Walker’s decisive shot in the final. What did our hero do? He again significantly improved the team’s results. Plus, he has won the last two consecutive NCAA titles! The last time Florida accomplished this feat was under Billy Donovan in the mid-2000s.

According to Wojnarowski, the Lakers are preparing a very lucrative offer for the specialist, since he earns around $6 million a year in Connecticut. The California franchise is so confident in his abilities that they are willing to offer him a long-term contract, something they did not do a few years ago with then-NBA championship coach Tyronn Lue.

This decision is also surprising because Los Angeles invites an atypical coach. We all know that the Lakers are stars, Hollywood, individualism and talent. Normally they don’t invite Pep Guardiola, but Carlo Ancelotti (sorry for the football comparison). What I mean: Dan Hurley is an absolute tactical expert who encourages team play and intense training. These specialists are not usually part of the star teams; He invites those who can create a good atmosphere in the locker room and give freedom to the stars. Darwin Ham and Frank Vogel seemed to be exactly the type of coaches.

But the Lakers decided to change their approach. Executives understand that the average level of tactical knowledge among coaches across the league is increasing. Young coaches, trained in the era of advanced analytics, are emerging and often outperform motivational coaches in playoff series. Postseason rivalries are a chess match between two minds: who will make what move, who will respond with what, who will adapt faster and better to the opponent. Los Angeles understands that coaches like Ham will almost always lose tactical duels to the conventional Mark Daignault.

However, this is not to say that Hurley is a Joe Mazzulla-type coach; after all, Dan has been practicing this craft for about 30 years. He has lived through many eras of basketball and has always been successful. Perhaps the Lakers see him as someone who can handle the arduous role of coaching a star team, but he also has outstanding talent as a coach. Almost every season of Los Angeles is interesting and the next one will definitely be no exception. Can a glamorous brand coexist with a tactical geek? We’ll see!
