Two wins for Verstappen in one day! But Hamilton has a nightmare after a joyful morning.

The seven-time champion finished only 18th in the F1 standings, while Sainz reached the final even after an accident.

After the morning sprint, all teams and drivers had a little time to work on the setup, trying to draw the right conclusions from the morning race. Will this help anyone get closer to sprint dominator Max Verstappen? Qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix was supposed to partially answer this question.

Q1: Hamilton’s failure after the morning’s success

After the sprint race, Lewis Hamilton was pleased with the good condition of the car and was looking forward to a good race on Sunday. Unfortunately, there will be problems with this: the Briton failed in the first qualifying segment and will now only start 18th. The seven-time world champion was to blame: he made a mistake braking at the end of the stretch and lost too much time.

We could have overlooked another representative of the best team: Sergio Pérez showed result number 15 and he himself admitted on the radio that everything was on the brink. Zhou, Magnussen, the aforementioned Hamilton, as well as Tsunoda and Sargent failed to get the Mexican out of Q2. Yuki’s DRS did not work on the first attempt, and after the second the Japanese did not understand why he finished only in 19th place. Tsunoda’s comment is very similar to what Ricciardo said after the previous Grand Prix, this time ahead of his teammate. Does the new chassis work?

On the other hand, we highlight another mistake by Logan Sargent: the American spun on the second flying lap. Unfortunately, so far the Williams driver has done nothing to have the opportunity to compete in a third season in Formula 1.

How was the speed race:

Alonso and Sainz got stuck and ruined each other’s sprint. Verstappen left everyone again

P2: The accident is not an obstacle for Sainz

Halfway through the second segment, Carlos Sainz suffered an accident at the exit of the last corner. The Spaniard entered the corner too wide and failed to hold the car as he picked up the gravel. The Ferrari flew towards the stop, but fortunately for Carlos, it did not suffer serious damage other than a fracture in the nose. The Spaniard was able to return to the pits and, after mechanics inspected the car, he attempted a second attempt.

And with Ferrari everything went well: Sainz not only reached the top 10, but he did so with a third result, a little faster than Leclerc! For God’s sake, the worse it is for the Spanish, the better.

In general, there were no global sensations: Lance Stroll’s 11th place, which lost only two tenths to Fernando Alonso, but was enough to not enter Q3, could hardly be called that. Among the representatives of the middle peasants, Hulkenberg and Bottas made their way even further. Well, behind Stroll were Ricciardo, Ocon, Albon and Gasly. Note that in the old version of Alpin without new products, Pierre lost a quarter of a second to Esteban.

Q3: Double for Red Bull on Saturday

The first attempts of the qualifying final confirmed the superiority of Max Verstappen: the Dutchman was four tenths ahead of Alonso and five tenths ahead of Pérez. The McLaren drivers were a little further away, but Sainz and Leclerc only finished sixth and seventh, surprisingly weak form for the Scuderia. Was there any chance to correct everything at least partially in the second segment?

Well, Ferrari improved its results, but so did everyone else! Max confirmed his pole position with another fast lap, and Pérez managed to catch up, losing just over three tenths to his teammate and completing a “qualifying double.” Sergio pushed Fernando Alonso to third place, with whom Lando Norris will start from the second row: he lost only 17 thousandths against the Spaniard and at the same time he was one tenth ahead of Piastri.

Leclerc still managed to leave Sainz behind: Charles was 8 thousandths faster and at the same time lost only 16 thousandths to Piastri, an astonishing density in the dispute for fifth place. Russell was satisfied with eighth position and was only ahead of Hulkenberg and Bottas: in their battle among the middle peasants, the German and his Haas surpassed the Finn with Kick-Sauber by half a tenth.

The main race of the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix begins on Sunday, April 21 at 10:00 Moscow time.
