The Khimki city court extended the arrest of two-time Olympic champion Brittney Griner, a member of the US basketball team, accused of drug trafficking, the court’s press service told RBC.
“The detention of American basketball player Brittney Griner has been extended until June 18,” the court said.
Greiner was arrested in February after a service dog at Sheremetyevo airport indicated her carry-on luggage might contain drugs. The Federal Customs Service said the vape cartridges found in Greiner’s bag contained hash oil liquid.
A criminal case was brought against Greiner under paragraph “c” of Part 2 of Art. 229.1 of the Criminal Code of Russia (smuggling of narcotic drugs in a significant amount). The penalty provided for in this article is imprisonment from five to ten years. On March 17, Greiner refused to challenge the drug smuggling charge in court.
The US State Department considered basketball player Greiner “illegally detained” in Russia
In early May, the US State Department said it believes Greiner was unlawfully detained and that her case will be handled by the Office of the US Special Representative for Hostage Affairs (SPEHA).
As noted by CNN, the transfer of the case to this structure means more flexibility in the negotiations for Greiner’s release.
Greiner has been playing for UMMC since 2015. As part of the US national team, the 31-year-old basketball player has twice won the Olympic Games (2016, 2020) and the World Championship (2014, 2018).
