Which stars will not play in Euro 2024. Not all the reasons are sporting.

Date: July 12, 2024 Time: 18:33:46

Euro 2024 in Germany is getting closer. The 24 teams have already published registrations for the tournament (some are extended, others are final). Unfortunately, not all the best footballers will play in the Euro Cup. We tell you who we won’t see on the field and why they weren’t included in the lineup.

Thibaut Courtois (Belgium, Real Madrid)

Season statistics: 5 games, 0 goals conceded

It’s funny, but the best goalkeeper in the world will not play in Euro 2024. Although he is ready. How is that? In June 2023, Courtois fell out with Belgian national team coach Domenico Tedesco. He named Romelu Lukaku captain for the friendly match against Austria. And then Tedesco and Courtois quarreled: the coach talked about the goalkeeper’s offensive and Thibault said that someone had pressured Domenico to give the armband to Lukaku. Courtois also reported an injury, which is why he left the national team after the match against Austria.

Thibault then suffered an ACL injury in early August, forcing him to miss nearly the entire season. But in the end he returned, showing an excellent performance in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund (2:0). And Tedesco had not yet included Thibault in the candidacy for Euro 2024. The Belgian coach explained this by saying that Courtois would not have time to get fit. Although what are we talking about if the goalkeeper fully recovered and played in the Champions League final? In general, due to a stupid conflict, the Belgians lost an excellent assistant.

Courtois became the author of an unusual achievement:

Courtois is the second player in Champions League history whose first start of the season was in the final.

Marcus Rashford (England, Manchester United)

Season statistics: 43 games, 8 goals, 5 assists

Rashford had a weak season at Manchester United. He was not always in the starting eleven and only scored eight goals. A very modest indicator for a footballer who claims to be the leader of Manchester United. Since 2016, Rashford has not left the England team. But manager Gareth Southgate did not include Marcus in the Euro 2024 squad. It not only affected the striker’s average form, but also the fierce competition. And without Rashford, England have a huge pool of talent in all three positions.

Jadon Sancho (England, Manchester United)

Season statistics: 24 games, 3 goals, 3 assists

Sancho had a brilliant second half of the season at Borussia Dortmund. But the first part was a failure. Jadon had a conflict with Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag, for which the winger was even suspended from training. The Dutchman stated that Sancho shows poor results in classes. And the footballer responded by publishing a statement on social networks, calling Ten Hag’s words a lie.

This continued until the winter, when Borussia rented out their former player. In Germany, Jadon flourished again. But this was not enough to qualify for the England team. Still, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham deserved to be in the team much more.

Is Manchester United’s crisis the coach’s fault?

Manchester United is drowning. What is Ten Hag really to blame for?

Raheem Sterling (England, Chelsea)

Season statistics: 43 games, 10 goals, 8 assists

Chelsea, to put it mildly, has not had the best season in history. Sixth place in the Premier League and defeat in the English League Cup final is not the result that fans expect. Sterling didn’t stand out in the big picture and had an average season by his standards. Cole Palmer stole all the attention. He will go to the European Championship with England, but Sterling will not. Although Rahim has been an integral part of the team for the last decade.

Reece James (England, Chelsea)

Season statistics: 11 games, 2 assists

While Sterling was prevented from reaching the Euros due to poor form, James will not play for England due to injuries. Rhys suffered injuries throughout the season and played only 11 games. James suffered a hamstring injury in August and returned in October. But in December there was a relapse, followed by surgery and a long recovery. Rhys returned to the field in mid-May. But this was clearly not enough to play for England at Euro 2024.

James will have a new coach in the 2024/2025 season:

Chelsea surprised with a new coach. Who is Enzo Maresca?

Mats Hummels (Germany, Borussia Dortmund)

Season statistics: 40 games, 4 goals, 1 assist

Mats Hummels

Hummels had a good season and was one of the main reasons Dortmund reached the Champions League final. But the coach of the German national team, Julian Nagelsmann, did not call Mats to the national team. “It was brief and disappointing. Everything lasted less than two minutes. Then I had to go to training. However, in those moments I don’t need long conversations or explanations. Enough talk. What is the reason for not calling? If I understood correctly, then, in addition to my suitability in the reserve role, it was about age-related characteristics, such as physical condition,” Hummels said angrily. Nagelsmann probably plans to play with a high defensive line at Euro 2024. Germany needs fast players and Hummels, 35, does not meet that criteria.

Hummels is a footballer who united two eras of Borussia:

León Goretzka (Germany, Bayern)

Season statistics: 42 games, 6 goals, 11 assists

Another surprising decision from Nagelsmann. If Hummels’ absence can still be explained, then the situation with Leon Goretzka’s non-callup is already more complicated. The midfielder is only 29 years old and has not suffered any injuries in the last year. Goretzka also had a good season, earning at least a place in the German national team.

“We had long negotiations with Hummels and Goretzka, they are disappointed with my decision, but it is quite understandable. At the end of the day, as a head coach, I have to make decisions in the best interest of the team. They did everything they could to be included in the application. I tried to explain why they didn’t take them. It is understandable that they are upset. “I can’t say we had a bad conversation, but of course more pleasant conversations happen in life,” Nagelsmann said. The coach did not call León to the 2024 team. The most likely reason is that he does not fit into the tactical ideas. But it would be good to play it safe and have a player of this level in the squad. A strange decision by Nagelsmann.

Giorgio Scalvini (Italy, Atalanta)

Season statistics: 44 games, 2 goals, 3 assists

Another great defender who grew up in the Atalanta system is Gian Piero Gasperini. Scalvini would probably become the main defender of the Italian team at Euro 2024. But he was unfortunately seriously injured. And when: in Atalanta’s last game of the season! The Bergamascos faced Fiorentina, the match decided little regarding the situation of the tournament. And Scalvini was injured in the 84th minute. What a shame!

Manuel Locatelli (Italy, Juventus)

Season statistics: 40 games, 1 goal, 6 assists

The 2020 European champion will not play for Italy in the next tournament. Locatelli is Juventus’ main player; He spent the 2023/2024 season without injuries. But in the ideas of the coach of the Italian team, Luciano Spalletti, there is no place for him. Of the defensive midfielders, for example, Brian Cristante (Roma), Nicolo Fagioli (Juventus), Michael Folorunsho (Verona), Jorginho (Arsenal) and Samuele Ricci (Torino) aroused more confidence. Will Locatelli’s absence at the Euros become a disaster for Spalletti? We’ll see.

Strahinja Erakovic (Serbia, Zenit)

Season statistics: 37 games, 3 assists

Strahinja Erakovic

The Zenit defender had a good first season in Saint Petersburg. The Serbian has the fewest complaints from the team’s defensive line. But there was no place for him on the team. But Spartak defender Srdjan Babic was called up by coach Dragan Stojkovic. Because? First of all, Erakovic is right-handed and Babic is left-handed. The Serbs play with three centre-backs, so left-footed players are vital. And Strahinja did not convince coach Stojkovic in the last calls. For example, in a friendly match against Russia, the Serbians conceded four goals when Erakovic was on the field (although Serbia’s expulsion must be taken into account). And in the next meeting with Cyprus, Strahinya appeared on the field only in the 85th minute. In general, apparently, Erakovic did not go to the Euro for a banal reason – he lost the competition.

Erakovic won the “golden” double with Zenit:

Martin de Rhône (Netherlands, Atalanta)

Season statistics: 46 games, 5 assists

Martin De Ron

Another Atalanta player who will not play in the Euro Cup due to injury. Martin probably would have attended the tournament had it not been for the hip injury he suffered in mid-May. Because of him, the Dutchman missed the end of the season, including the Europa League final with Bayer Leverkusen. Perhaps age also played a role: De Rohn is 33 years old. And Dutch national team coach Ronald Koeman sees younger guys in midfield.

Jan Matsen (Netherlands, Borussia Dortmund)

Season statistics: 38 games, 2 goals, 3 assists

Jan Matsen

Matsen really stood out when he was on loan at Borussia Dortmund. Yes, in the first half of the season, Ian sometimes appeared on the Chelsea field. But I only received care after moving to Germany. Borussia really liked the cooperation with the Dutchman: the club is ready for the outright purchase of Matsen. But coach Ronald Koeman does not see a place for Jan in the Dutch team. Matsen will probably already go to the next big tournament. In the meantime, you need to gain experience.

Gavi (Spain, Barcelona)

Season statistics: 15 games, 2 goals, 1 assist

Gavi was injured while playing with the Spanish team. The team has already secured participation in Euro 2024 and, for some reason, coach Luis de la Fuente released the squad for the match against Georgia. And Gavi, 19, damaged his cruciate ligaments, keeping him out for the rest of the season. It’s a shame, the midfielder could have participated in his first Euro Cup.

Álex Baldé (Spain, Barcelona)

Season statistics: 28 games, 1 goal, 1 assist

Alex Balde

The Barcelona left back injured his tendon in the Copa del Rey quarter-final match against Athletic Bilbao at the end of January. After that, Bucket never entered the field again. Of course, there was no talk of any participation in Euro 2024. We hope Alex makes a 100% recovery, has a great season with Barcelona and then shines at the 2026 World Cup.

David Alaba (Austria, Real Madrid)

Season statistics: 17 games, 2 assists

David Alaba

Alaba will miss Euro 2024 due to a torn cruciate ligament. He was injured in December 2023, after which he never entered the field again. Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has included Alaba in his squad for the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund. But it was more of a kind gesture. David is not ready to take the field. And it is unlikely that Alaba would have helped Ralf Rangnick’s Austrian team, where high pressure and tireless work for 90 minutes are at the forefront.
