In addition to Varvara, the ETC Tennis Academy has five tennis players from Russia.
According to French publication L’Equipe, the world’s number 41 racket, 22-year-old Russian tennis player Varvara Gracheva, who plays at the Elite Tennis Center (ETC) Academy in Cannes, has received French citizenship. On June 5, Gracheva received an official letter confirming her naturalization. The athlete herself was entitled to this, since she lived in the country for seven years. Varvara successfully passed the required language tests. At the same time, Gracheva’s team hopes that the tennis player will have time to participate in the matches of the French team at the Billie Jean King Cup before the 2024 Olympics in Paris (France). Barbara, according to the logic of events, should get into the national team, and from a sporting point of view, there are no obstacles. In the WTA ranking, only the fifth racket in the world, Caroline Garcia, surpasses her.

“No one from Russia contacted me to change citizenship. Not before the disclosure of this decision, not after. I have lived in France for more than six years. I have a good training base, I like the French culture, the lifestyle, the people. I want to stay here forever. I have friends here, I feel good in France. I made this decision before the pandemic. I hope that next year I can perform at Roland Garros under the French flag,” Gracheva said earlier in an interview with the Polish edition of Sport.pl.
Gracheva has yet to win competitions at the WTA level, but she plays pretty consistently at Grand Slam tournaments. She reached the third round at the US Open (twice), the Australian Open and Roland Garros (twice).

How did the fans take the news?
At the current Roland Garros, French tennis fans, aware of the upcoming transition, supported Grachev almost as their own. But in the comments to the L’Equipe material, they reacted differently to the change of citizenship made by Varvara. Some supported the transition, others reacted negatively. Here are the comments left by fans under the relevant news on the publication’s website.
“The next case is Medvedev”;
“She won’t win another game”;
“We can win tournaments…”;
“It took him a few months to get citizenship because he had lived in the country for five years. I know people who have lived in France for 40 years and are still waiting for their naturalization. Find the error”;
“There is a chance that the Frenchwoman will win the Grand Slam tournament again!”;
“When I look at his latest results, I say to myself: ‘Oh yes, this is really French’;
“It is Andreeva who should become French. She has great potential.”

Should we expect more results?
The joke about Medvedev (which we hope remains a joke) is justified. The champion of the US Open 2021 was included in the ETC academy from 2013 to 2020. And at present, the “listeners” of this institution, in addition to Gracheva, are five Russians at once. First of all, these are the Andreeva sisters, Erika, 18 years old, and Mirra, 16; the latter, thanks to the success in 2023, is already known throughout the world. In January, Andreeva Jr. reached the final of the junior Australian Open, and this clay season she brilliantly performed in the “thousand” in Madrid, where she reached the 1/8 final, losing to the world’s second racket Arina Sobolenko. , and at Roland Garros, where in the third round he stopped the sixth number of the WTA classification Corey Gauff.
How embarrassing! Andreeva, 16, lost to the sixth racket in the world and left Roland Garros
The world number 56 racket, Anna Blinkova, also participates in ETC. The 24-year-old athlete also showed great tennis at the current Roland Garros. In the second round he didn’t beat anyone but that same Garcia. And in the third round she was defeated by Elina Svitolina, which is really a fun coincidence! – Also related to France, being married to Gael Monfils. And the students of the aforementioned academy are Nikolai Vylegzhanin, 23, and Anastasia Mozgaleva, 21, who have been studying at ETC since 2018 and 2020, respectively. But their names will say nothing to a wide range of fans. These athletes do not have significant achievements.
