Will Carioca return to the RPL? After leaving Spartak, he took more trophies than the rojiblanca

Date: March 1, 2024 Time: 06:34:45

Rafael Carioca is already 34 years old! The Brazilian celebrates his birthday on Sunday June 18 and we tell you how the career of the former Spartak midfielder unfolds. By the way, it is possible that he will return to Russia.

We remember the Brazilian “gangs” in the Russian championship:

The main diasporas in the RPL. Zenit is not the first to guess with the Brazilians

Carioca was an ambiguous figure, a folklore character, but one way or another he was remembered by the Spartak fans. The Moscow club bought it from Gremio in the winter of 2009 for 4.7 million euros, rented it out twice and loaned it out to Atlético Mineiro in the summer of 2015. The defensive midfielder was brought to Russia to help the rojiblancos win. win trophies, but Rafael never won anything with the team. But still he played more than a hundred matches for Spartak. Specifically, 139 games in which he scored three goals and gave six assists.

After the departure of the Brazilian defensive midfielder, Spartak won three trophies: a championship, a Russian Cup and a Super Cup. In terms of prize money, Carioca even benefited from his separation from the Moscow club. There are eight awards in the Rafael collection.

While still on loan at Atlético Mineiro, Carioca won the 2014 Brazilian Cup. His team beat rivals Cruzeiro in the two-legged final. The Bettas won the first derby 2-0 and the second 1-0. It was then that the leaders of Atlético Mineiro, thinking about the transfer of Rafael, came to the final conclusion: they have to take him.

“Carioca is a deuce? For me, Carioca – five. She was three and four. But globally speaking, she’s a five”.

Then Carioca at Atlético Mineiro won the Minas Gerais state championship (Liga Mineiro) two more times. But in the Brazilian championship, the “petushki” with the former Spartak player did not exceed second place, although he constantly participated in the Copa Libertadores – the South American analogue of the Champions League. Rafael gave a powerful first season after returning home. At the end of 2015, he was recognized as the best defensive midfielder in Serie A and included in the symbolic team of the tournament.

And in the fall of 2016, Carioca received an invitation to the Brazil national team for the first time in his career. It is true that he did not debut for her. He sat on the bench for four matches of the qualifying round for the 2018 World Cup. But in the status of a candidate for the national team, Rafael was sold to the Mexican Tigres in the summer of 2017 – Atlético Mineiro won 2 55 million euros with this operation. The Brazilian club still had to pay Spartak, whose debt was finally paid off only in June 2020.

In general, Carioca was not one of those players who ran from team to team. If we put aside the lease in Vasco da Gama, then the defensive midfielder played several seasons in all his clubs: three, five, six. Rafael stayed longer at Tigres, where he continues to play to this day. In Mexico he definitely took root better than in Russia. There, the Brazilian took five trophies.

It took Carioca only four months to win the Mexican Championship, which is held according to a non-standard system for Europe: it is divided into two tournaments: Apertura (from July to December) and Clausura (from January to May). The league is considered very strong, attracting large legionnaires from South America and even Europe. Suffice it to recall André-Pierre Gignac, who moved to the same Tigres in 2015 as a member of the French national team, and in eight years he won many group and individual awards with this team.

In 2017, Tigres won the Apertura with Carioca. Six months later, he took the Super Bowl championship. In 2019, Tigres took the Clausura gold medals. A year later, this team won the CONCACAF Champions League, defeating Los Angeles in the final (2: 1) thanks to Gignac’s goal in the final. Carioca played the decisive match of the tournament from the first to the last minute. Thanks to that success, Tigres went on to the Club World Cup, where they reached the final and, with Rafael on the squad, lost only to Bayern (0-1).

And in May 2023, Carioca and his Tigres were champions again, they won the Clausura. After that, the club offered the defensive midfielder a new contract. The Brazilian signed a contract until the summer of 2024 with the option to extend for another year.

Karpin created one of the main sensations of the Russian championship:

Rostov is also the winner of this RPL season. Karpin almost did the impossible

Carioca continues to be an important player in the Tigres base (he scored 5+17 in 252 games with this team), however, he is ready to return to Russia. Representatives of the Santanna Esportes agency, which deals with Rafael, recently commented on the potential transfer of him to the RPL:

“Is it possible for Carioca to return to the Russian Premier League? Rafael recently extended his contract with the Tigers, but it all depends on the offer that comes through. We would have a lot of respect for such an option.” (Meta-ratings)

Which of the top clubs in the RPL lacks an experienced high-class defensive midfielder?
