“Anyone can be weak and strong too.” Alexandre Blanar – on the opening of the Serene Gallery

Last Thursday curated by a friend and regular collaborator BURO. Alexander Blanar on Prechistenskaya Embankment in Moscow opened the Serene gallery. He told us about the space’s debut exhibition entitled Light Plumage, as well as the new names in art and the prospects of Russian artists (and female artists) in the international market.

I have wanted to work for a long time using different materials, he wanted the exhibition to bring together all possible formats of contemporary art. Hence, for example, the ceramics of Svetlana Tsepkalo from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. She lives in Moscow and creates glazed sculptures that seem frozen in motion. Anya Merman from the Association opened it for me. Or Lisa Bobkova’s metal installation “Scars” with the word “love” welded on. The name translates as “scar” or “scar” and symbolizes healing.

“Light plumage” – women’s exhibition. It was a new experience for me as I mainly work with male artists. Such a selection turned out to be absolutely intuitive. Lightness, tenderness, weakness are characteristics that are often attributed to women. Modern society is doing its best to destroy these stereotypes. Anyone can be weak, regardless of gender. And strong too, despite the deceptive fragility. Inner strength does not always show itself to the outside world.

The plumage is light and the paintings are heavy. Because they are all about what is happening today with each of us. Thus, the work “Woman Tragedy” by Aziza, the founder of the Hide gallery, with rough strokes and a rich dark palette, turned out to be very feminine. Unframed canvas of Irina Petrakova under a sound title Endless Horizon of Violence 2 has been in production since the end of February. Well, Lisa Bobkova’s 55-kilogram sheet of metal is only physically heavy, but ephemeral in meaning.

I am not afraid to do new projects in difficult times. In addition to Serene, which we are working on together with Irina Dzyuba and the Glyph agency, I launched the Blanar Art communication office at the end of February with the support of Elina Zubova. For me, the main thing in all endeavors is to have the right people around and trust them.

At Serene, we originally planned to launch in March with an international program, a solo exhibition by Giovanni Leonardo Bassana. Then there was going to be Jwan Yosef. But for obvious reasons, this did not happen. I hope that one day we will return to our previous plans, because these artists are now represented in the White Cube gallery in Paris, they have projects in Venice and they are ready to collaborate, you just have to choose the right time and place. Therefore, now, together with the gallery, we, like many others, look to the United Arab Emirates. But I am extremely happy that I got “Light Feathering”. This exhibition clearly and succinctly, only 12 works by eight artists, reflects current moods and demands.

Self-censorship is not for me. And the last thing I want to do is that. My friends and I worked on exhibitions that they could come to us for, but they didn’t. Therefore, I want to keep doing what I think is right. Speak clear. Art is a matter of interpretation. Yes, we work under strict censorship, we work carefully. And in each position you can find double meanings if you wish. And by the way, I did not set myself the task of somehow uniting the artists. Light plumage ”- they came together, talking about the same thing, but in completely different ways.

I want to exist in an international context. This is very important to me, and I understand how much our artists need it. In the fall, thanks to Nadia Zinovskaya, I went to Yakutia, where I was surprised by the work of young artists. They can safely claim prizes and awards, they are competitive. And we must exist in the open art market. I would still like to try to be a bridge between Russian artists and the world art industry.

Here are all the artists that I sincerely like. Light plumage” was intuitively assembled, in parallel with the formation of the name and the concept. And it turned out that we all want to say one thing. The main idea is that we are all strong and we will all survive.
