The new football season in Russia starts tomorrow, July 15. First we await the match for the Super Cup between Zenit and CSKA, and a week later the 1st round of the RPL will be played. Vladimir Fedotov’s team became one of the most successful last season, but now it is worrying for her.

Fedotov deserved the award not only for the results. Second place and the Cup is an achievement that exceeded even CSKA’s wildest expectations. The team had and still has a short bench, but the training allowed them to get the most out of the clip. It can hardly be called a classic top performance – CSKA deservedly took both the trophy and silver. However, with the existing depth of the composition, even these achievements look like something incredible.
The most obvious takeaway from last season is that CSKA need to strengthen and expand their squad in order to maintain their level and progress. Footballers are not robots, and if in recent months Fedotov managed to avoid an epidemic of injuries, then in the future, without the necessary changes, damage is inevitable. And now almost three weeks of the summer transfer window are over. The new season basically starts tomorrow. And what’s new with CSKA? Nothing good. Jesús Medina (25 appearances last season for RPL and a key role on the left flank in the spring) was sold to the main rival and main competitor – Spartak. Baktiyor Zainutdinov, who could replace Medina in the band, according to the news, with one foot in Besiktas. And Jorge Carrascal caught the attention of Atlético Paranaense, and CSKA does not hide it. Yes, and they are unlikely to contain much.

There is nothing wrong with the departure transfers themselves – this is an integral part of the football business. But newcomers are also needed, especially in the case of CSKA. And they still don’t exist. There is too much and too little time to improve at the same time. On the one hand, the transfer window will be open until mid-September, on the other hand, the season starts now. CSKA is to some extent a hostage to the situation, but the club knew all the dates in advance, so there is no one else to blame for the fact that the team is not ready for the championship on paper. Fedotov openly said in May that it was necessary to strengthen the roster, but since then the leadership has not signed anyone.
Now there are three scenarios. Optimal: CSKA is making several key signings in the near future and continues to go from strength to strength in the remaining time, allowing us to repeat last season’s success. Critical: There is no gain, and the team, for natural reasons, fails at least the summer-fall part of the season. Fantastic: No benefit, but Fedotov manages to keep CSKA at a high level. As he will understand, it is better not to focus on the last scenario.
