Volunteers continue to work at the flooded Nativity Church in the ancient village of Krokhino, Vologda region. They preserve the ruins to create a lighthouse temple in memory of the churches, towns, villages and cities that were flooded during the construction of the reservoirs.
With the donations collected, volunteers were able to pay for the carpenters’ work, purchase solar panels to power the bell tower lights, and a lightning rod to protect it during a storm.
The bell tower of the Krokhino lighthouse temple is the tallest object in the area and therefore there is a risk of being struck by lightning. Now the bell tower has wooden roofs and this poses a danger in the event of a lightning strike. Solar panels are needed to install a light source on the bell tower: you will remember the lighthouse on the dome of the temple, thanks to which it was not destroyed before the flood.
Before the arrival of winter, volunteers aim to raise funds and install wooden frames in the bell tower to cover the windows and arched openings with a special material; In this way the bell tower will be protected from the entry of precipitation. These works will also be carried out thanks to donations.
Let us remember that the Krokhinsky Church is special for the “Homeland”. In 1993, photographer Alexander Dzhus took the first aerial photograph of the temple; In 2017 we made a film about how the temple ruins are preserved and since then we have covered the activities of the volunteers.
