José Antonio Zan, president of the works council of Alcoa San Cibrao (Cervo, Lugo), recognizes that “the feeling of the staff, the region and part of Galicia is fed up” with respect to the company, because “it seems that A biblical plague has fallen on us with this company and we are not able to solve it,” in a statement to Efe.
The statements refer to the company’s previous announcement, in which they reported that they would temporarily postpone the planned investment to provide the San Cibrao aluminum factory with a new anode furnace. This facility was included in the agreement signed in December 2021 with the works council for the hibernation of the plant until January 2024.
“It will be difficult to reach an understanding”
In Zan’s eyes, “it will be difficult to reach an understanding when we talk and on the one hand the agreements are signed and fulfilled – as happens with the works council, while on the other hand they play shell games.” He assures that “we want clarity.” “They confirm to us that they are going to do in the factory what they have just signed,” he adds, “and that they do it as soon as possible, because we are not up to bullshit.”
According to the president of the committee, the company “has to comply with the agreements it has signed.” If you do not want to comply with them, what you have to do is sell the company, with the funds allocated” to modernize the plant. “Powerful, reliable buyers with guarantees, both national and international, there are several. The problem here is Alcoa. You have to decide. Clarify what you want to do and stop torturing the staff, the region and Galicia,” he concludes.
