“More than 4.5 thousand Indian students have returned to India so far,” RIA Novosti reports.
Apart from the Indians, citizens of Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan have left Bangladesh. The Ministry of External Affairs said that the Indian Embassy in Dhaka is in touch with local authorities to ensure the safety of its citizens.
Recall that mass protests in Bangladesh began in July after employment quotas were introduced for relatives of freedom fighters who participated in the war of independence in 1971. Many students considered these measures discriminatory and demanded the resignation of the country’s prime minister.
It was recently reported that 300 police officers were injured during clashes with protesters. Following this, live ammunition was used to disperse protesters in Dhaka.
