On the second day of the Channel One Cup, women’s teams competed for the trophy. They were led by two highly qualified mentors. Nikolay Karpol and Zoran Terzic need no introduction. The first is the record holder for everything and everyone, the second now heads the Russian national team and the current champion of our Super League, Kazan Dynamo-Ak Bars.
From the initial line-ups it was clear what the coaches were guided by during the draft. Karpol tried to play with old connections, choosing his combination mainly from volleyball players who played for Uralochka. Terzic focused on the current players of the Russian national team, reinforcing the team with Belarusian forward Anastasia Garelik. By the way, it was she who became the MVP, scoring 25 points. The Serbian coach admonished his team with a call not to be afraid of anything on the court and added with a smile: “They should only be afraid of me.”
The match turned out to be interesting and, as in the men’s category of the tournament, ended in four sets. 3:1 – Zoran Terzic’s team won. She played more cleanly and was more accurate in her serve at the right moment. This is what came to light in the brilliant ending of the second set. This game was the most interesting, both teams had a 3-4 point advantage and everything ended in the balance – 28:26. In general, it should be noted that, as in the men’s tournament, the coaches did not intend to arrange some kind of show to the detriment of wrestling. No, everything was adult, passionate and very emotional. Probably, for those who had never watched volleyball and saw it for the first time on Channel One, it was not very interesting, but the fans were definitely happy.

Despite the defeat and the characteristic raised voice during the breaks, Nikolai Karpol did not seem upset. “It is difficult to prepare in two days. Many people have not played for a long time, for example, Romanova missed the season and we brought her back to the lead role. It was difficult, but it is good that we fought, I am happy with the girls,” the maestro noted after the match. And his team really looked good, returning the intrigue to the match in the third game. Tatyana Tolok started moving in attack, made a block, and Anna Podkopaeva made several iconic saves in defense. Probably many spectators in the hall and on the TV screens dreamed of a tie break, but in the fourth set Terzic’s team regained the initiative and brought the match to victory.
Well, the Serb himself fulfilled one of his dreams in volleyball. The day before, he admitted that 20 years ago, like all coaches in the world, he dreamed of beating Nikolai Karpol’s team. Of course, Terzich defeated Uralochka in the Russian Championship, but the capabilities of his current club and the Yekaterinburg team are now incomparable. But at the Channel One Cup the forces were approximately equal, so the victory was valuable.
