To mark Nanushka’s 20th anniversary in spring 2025, Sandra Sándor brought the Budapest-based brand to New York, a city she says cemented her desire to become a designer.
They decided to dedicate the anniversary to both the brand’s past and present, naming the collection “Paper” – this is how Sandor played with the idea of a turned page. Both literally and figuratively. “I’ve looked at what Nanushka has represented over the past 20 years and I also want to see what relevance it will have in the next 20 years. So it’s like turning the page into the future,” Sandra explained.
Speaking more specifically about the things themselves, she created strips of poplin with raw edges that looked like strips of paper cut with almost 100% precision. This is how multi-level fringes appeared on the catwalk: on midi skirts and straw bags, hems of long dresses, leather belts of leather dresses (I would like to express special thanks for the beautiful milky color) and trousers. The latter really looked like they were woven from strips of paper, as if it were a children’s New Year’s craft.
We paid attention to “knitted” boots and stocking boots (we really want to know how and from what), a variation on the theme of crop tops (we are confidently adding them to the list of future trends) and a chainmail suit. There was also a lot of emphasis on the waist, with a belt, a belt or a sweater tied on top.
From the past, and very worthily, Sandor took with him the Hungarian symbols of the Kopjaf (16th-century emblems that help denote identity), which were printed on silk scarves, leather wallets and stamped on gold coins, as well as Okobor’s signature vegan leather.
