A resident of the Kursk region ran for water under fire from the Armed Forces of Ukraine and spent the night in a church – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Sergei Maklakov, who spoke to TASS journalists, says that the only source of water available in the area where he was located was the Psel River.

“Whether they wanted it or not, they ran to the river under fire to get the last thing. A few days before the arrival of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, there was no electricity or gas in the village,” Maklakov says.

Since the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ raid on the Kursk border region, the man was hiding in the basement of his house, but then his house burned down. He went to look for accommodation for the night in the abandoned houses of his neighbors, spent several days by the river, and spent the last ten days in a church. Maklakov found food in the neighbors’ basements.

The man had only one icon left of his own.

On September 16, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the restoration of control over Uspenovka and Borki in the Kursk region. Maklakov is apparently from Borok, as he was able to assess the state of the village after the attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. According to him, the settlement was 80% destroyed and only a few inhabitants remained there.

Maklakov himself is now in a temporary accommodation centre.
