The role of the mother in the life of the family cannot be overestimated, which is why, since 1998, Mother’s Day has been celebrated annually in Russia. But for some reason, the importance of raising children on the part of the father of the family is undeservedly kept silent. In Russia there is no specific date to celebrate Father’s Day: it is celebrated annually on the third Sunday in October. Although this holiday is relatively new to us, it has a history rich in traditions.
What will we tell you about:
Vacation history
The founders of Father’s Day celebrations are the United States. There, in Washington state, back in 1909, lived the sonorous Louise Smart Dodd. Growing up in a large family, where, in addition to her, five other sisters and brothers were brought up, the woman thought about the role of the father in the family.
Their concern is quite understandable: it was on the shoulders of the head of the family that all the problems associated with education fell. William Jackson Smart was forced to replace the mother of his children, because she died after the birth of his sixth child. Considering the seriousness of the situation, William was able to carry this burden with dignity and become a true hero in the eyes of his children.
Sonora started a petition asking that Father’s Day be approved as a holiday. The local authorities received it cordially and set a date: in Washington it began to be celebrated on October 19. However, the creator of the initiative wanted Father’s Day to be celebrated on June 5, her father’s birthday. This statement took a little longer.
Soon the holiday gradually reached other cities in the United States. In 1966, by decree of the country’s president, Lyndon Johnson, Father’s Day finally found its date: it is now celebrated every third Sunday in June. These same figures were collected by other countries in the world.

How Father’s Day appeared in Russia
In 2021, Vladimir Putin signed a decree that inaugurated the annual celebration of Father’s Day in our country. According to the decree, the holiday is celebrated every third Sunday in October. This year the date falls on the 20th. The holiday was established in order to increase the importance of fatherhood in raising children.
Surprisingly, some regions have been celebrating this memorable day for a long time. For example, in Ulyanovsk the holiday was established in 2005. In Volgograd, Father’s Day has been celebrated annually since 2006. In Cherepovets – since 2002, a year later, in Novosibirsk and in Kursk – since 2013.
Traditions of celebrating Father’s Day in different countries.
The first large-scale celebration of Father’s Day in our country took place in 2014. Then the Papa Fest festival took place in Moscow. This led to events in several parts of Russia: Novosibirsk, Kaliningrad and Kazan. However, Father’s Day is traditionally celebrated not only in Russia but also abroad.
For example, Finland takes the celebration very seriously. Their traditions are very unique: during the day it is customary to visit men’s graves, thus honoring the memory of all deceased fathers. And in the evening, residents organize cozy gatherings at home: they sing songs and dance with their families.
