In Türkiye, which recently experienced strong earthquakes, a new cataclysm is occurring. A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck the eastern province of Malatya on Wednesday morning. The epicenter occurred near the city of Calais. The tremors were also felt by residents of the neighboring provinces of Diyarbakir, Sanliurfa, Elazig, Batman and Tunceli. They ran out into the street, many have not yet returned to their homes for fear of new aftershocks.
According to preliminary data, there were no casualties or serious damage. Turkey’s Emergency Management Agency reported that at least four buildings were damaged and rescuers managed to pull four people alive from the rubble.
The head of the Turkish Interior Ministry, Ali Erlikaya, said work has already begun to assess the damage. Malatya authorities have ordered the closure of schools for one day as a preventive measure.
