What is known about the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Date: October 18, 2024 Time: 11:17:06

As clarified by the Israeli police, the initial identification was made by comparing the teeth and then the fingerprints were compared.

It is noted that Israeli soldiers followed Sinwar for about a year. In recent weeks, they have been operating in the southern Gaza Strip, where intelligence reports indicate there were several high-ranking Hamas members.

According to the Al Hadath television channel, several representatives of the leadership of the Izzaddin al-Qassam Brigade group were killed along with Sinwar. According to him, the Israeli Air Force attacked a house in Rafah where they were staying.

According to the Al Arabiya television channel, Tel Aviv notified the mediators in the indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas about the liquidation of Sinwar.

The Hamas movement itself has not yet commented on this information.

Meanwhile, US Presidential Assistant for Homeland Security Jake Sullivan said the Hamas leader was eliminated thanks to US intelligence. According to him, the United States is proud of the support it has provided to the IDF. Sullivan noted that Sinwar’s assassination dealt “an incredibly powerful blow to Hamas.” US Vice President Kamala Harris, for her part, announced the participation of US special forces in this operation. “U.S. intelligence and special operations personnel worked closely with their Israeli partners to identify and track Sinwar and other Hamas leaders, and I commend their work,” Harris said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the killing of the Hamas leader by the Israeli army marks the “beginning of the last day” of the organization, which “will no longer rule” in the Gaza Strip. According to him, the IDF will continue its military operation in the enclave until the hostages held by Hamas are released.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant stated the same. He called Sinwar’s death a “clear signal” for Hamas members to release the hostages and surrender. “This is a clear message to all our enemies: the IDF will pursue anyone who attempts to harm Israeli citizens or security forces, and we will bring them to justice,” Galant said.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that “in the coming days, the United States will redouble our efforts with our partners to end the conflict, secure the release of all hostages and chart a new path forward that allows the people of Gaza to start over.” President Joe Biden made similar comments. “There is now an opportunity to plan for a future in Gaza without Hamas in power and for a political settlement that provides a better future for Israelis and Palestinians,” the White House said.
