Option to place the Triumphal Arch in Nizhny Novgorod.
In August, an unexpected discovery was made on Sovetskaya Street: during excavation work in the Kanavinsky district, the base of the arch and the pavement were discovered. The found materials were sent for examination. For two months, computer modeling, materials science examinations were carried out and archival documents were recovered. The results were reported to journalists by the head of Nizhny Novgorod, Yuri Shalabaev:
“The experts came to the conclusion that it is very likely that the structures found are the foundations of one of the pillars of the triumphal arch. A combination of historiographic, field studies and three-dimensional computer models allowed us to conclude that the remains of the arch. They are authentic.”
Now the foundation of the arch can be placed under glass – this is one of the ideas for the museification of a historical object. In addition, city authorities are thinking about recreating the arch. According to the project developers, the new design will be as close as possible to the original, but it will be a smaller copy that will take into account modern urban planning conditions. Its location has not yet been definitively determined; It is planned to locate it in the historic center next to the discovered foundations.
In 1896 the XVI All-Russian Art and Industrial Exhibition was held in Nizhny Novgorod. The most august people attended its inauguration. The then-fashionable pseudo-Russian style arch on Moskovskaya Street, today Sovetskaya, was built precisely so that the emperor and his wife could make a ceremonial entrance to the fair. After the October Revolution it was dismantled.
