This has never happened in the history of serial murders. In the trial against the manic American architect Rex Heuermann, arrested last year, nightmarish documents were made public. The Long Island Ripper (named after the island where part of New York is located and where the murderer committed his crimes) compiled an entire “textbook” on his techniques and arsenal. It is a series of instructions: how to monitor the victim, torture him, get rid of evidence… The files were extracted from the maniac’s computer.
Heuermann committed murders in the 90s and 2000s. At least 6 women were his victims, and these are only proven crimes. Police believe the serial killer killed two dozen unfortunates.
One of the files found in the maniac contained a map with marks of the places where six massacres of prostitutes were committed; Among them the architect was looking for victims. In another file called the “Planning Document”, Heuermann detailed his crimes. The plan consisted of three sections: “Pre-event”, “Preparation” and “After the event”.
Another file, “Lessons Learned,” contained information on how future atrocities should be “improved.” For example, removing special signs – “signs (tattoos)” from the bodies so that they are not identified, with what force they should be hit and what improvised tools should be used to kill. Attached was a list of possible victims.
Let’s take an example from Heuermann’s entry, omitting the most disgusting details: “Fingerprints: a plastic bag of cat excrement. Hair and fibers. Truck stuck? Place for saw. “The more you do, the more clues you give.” Obviously, the killer wrote about possible evidence and unforeseen situations that could arise, with the same truck.
These data were added to the case after the prosecution filed new charges against Heuermann: for the murder of Sandra Costille in 1999 and for the beheading and dismemberment of Jessica Taylor in 2003.
Previously, the criminal was accused of the murder of four women, the so-called “Gilgo Four.” His remains were found in December 2010 near Gilgo Beach on Long Island. It was later revealed that they were young prostitutes Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Costello and Megan Waterman.
In general, it was difficult to believe that Rex Heuermann would turn out to be a serial executioner: a famous architect with an office in Manhattan, in the heart of New York, married with two children. But last summer he was arrested. Police have been searching for the Long Island Ripper for more than ten years. Heuermann wrapped the victims’ bodies in khaki burlap, prompting investigators to think about the series.
The first major evidence was found four years ago: a black belt with the monogram WH or HM. At the same time, a new investigation team was formed to closely follow the case. And he began to closely monitor Long Island residents. Heuermann was also included on the list. It turned out that at the moment when a call was received from an unknown man from a disposable phone to the relatives of the dead prostitutes (the maniac had such a habit), Heuermann’s mobile phone was recorded nearby. Subsequently, it was possible to compare samples of his DNA, taken from a half-eaten slice of pizza, and samples from the crime scene.
