Moscow’s authorities announced that the building of Moscow’s oldest station, Leningradsky, will be closed from August 11 “for renovation and integration into the Moscow transport system.”

It is not reported what kind of work is planned and how long the reconstruction will last. At the same time, all trains, both commuter and long-distance, will continue to arrive and depart from Leningradsky station as planned, but the route to them will change.

– The Leningrad railway station was restored about ten years ago, and I don’t know what kind of work they plan to do there now. At the same time, it should be noted that the historic station has two floors facing Komsomolskaya Square. Everything behind the facade was built in the mid-1970s,” railway historian Yuri Egorov told Rodina’s correspondent.

According to him, during the previous restoration, the historic volume of the station was renovated. The Soviet part was also redesigned: cafes and shops were added, the monument to Lenin was removed and the underground part was transformed.

“It is difficult to say why it was necessary to urgently close the station for passenger access,” says Yuri Egorov. – The station building is a cultural heritage of federal significance, but the powers to protect it have been transferred to the Moscow government – this is a common practice. By law, before starting such work, a historical and cultural examination must be submitted. I have not yet seen it on the website of the Moscow City Heritage. But the examination can be carried out retroactively, after the start of work. This is necessary because comments can be received. But, I repeat, I did not find such an examination in the public domain.

Leningradsky is the oldest station in Moscow, it was built between 1844 and 1851 according to the design of Konstantin Ton by architect Rudolf Zhelyazevich. Initially, the station was called Petersburg, then Nikolaevsky, Oktyabrsky, and for the last 100 years it has been called Leningradsky.
