Aliens, anarchists and a Star Wars parody: memorable films from the Voices festival

Several young actors travel to India, to the holy city of Varanasi, to star in a new film directed by Roman Mikhailov (Roman Mikhailov). After gathering theater students around him, he talks to them about cinema, art and, of course, love. But on the set, for which Mikhailov has been preparing for a long time and thoroughly, everything will go wrong: the same love that he preached to the film crew will interfere. And as a result, the students themselves will teach their teacher a lesson.

“We Need to Make Films About Love” is a new film by mathematician, playwright and director Roman Mikhailov. And if for some reason you have not been able to find contact with his works before, his new film is an excellent opportunity to try again – this is the most popular of his films. “We Should Make Films About Love” is like a documentary: a group of young actors (Mark Eidelstein, Chingiz Garayev, Maria Matsel, Illarion Marov, Alexandra Kiseleva, playing seven of themselves) go on a journey. The characters periodically speak directly to the camera or address the operator behind it. But at some point, mind your hands, the film imperceptibly moves away from reality and turns into an art film.

Here everything came together: wonderful young actors who have a lot of energy and who dilute Mikhailov’s theorizations (apparently this is also a bit of self-irony of the director). And this film best illustrates the thesis of the title: after watching it, you really want to talk, think and film about love.
