“We recently discovered a radio transient that is unlike anything astronomers have seen before. Not only does it last almost an hour (the longest ever observed), but in several observations we have seen it sometimes emits long, bright flashes, sometimes rapid and weak pulses and sometimes nothing at all,” the researchers wrote.
They clarified that a strange signal was recorded by a telescope in Western Australia.
It is known that similar signals can come from neutron stars, but it is believed that their cycle cannot be that long, the scientists write.
Caleb and Lenk admitted they still can’t explain what it is. In their opinion, it could be a very unusual neutron star. However, other options cannot be ruled out, the researchers noted.
