The airport, located on the French side of the border near Basel, announced on its website at around 2 p.m. (15 GMT) that it had resumed operations and was gradually resuming flights. Earlier, the airport administration said it had been evacuated and closed “for security reasons.”
The prefecture of the French department of Haut-Rhin told AFP that the evacuation was due to a bomb threat and that bomb disposal experts had been sent to the scene.
The evacuation came as French authorities searched for those responsible for arson attacks on the high-speed rail network. Due to a series of deliberate arson attacks by unknown attackers, rail traffic on the Atlantic, North and East axes of the SNCF railway company was disrupted.
