BURO playlist: music for post-punk lovers by Tim Aminov

Date: September 20, 2024 Time: 06:44:30

Tim Aminov released his second full-length album, “Animal”. The release became the starting point of a new era in the artist’s career, breaking all stereotypes and listeners’ ideas about his work. Especially for BURO. the musician has prepared a post-punk playlist that will help you get in the mood for listening to the record.

First of all, I want to say that post-punk is a very collective genre and contains many different directions and tendencies, just like any other music. Moreover, musicians and bands often find their style in mixing genres. And the temporal and cultural background also has a great influence. Therefore, it is difficult to say where post-punk begins and where it ends. Genres that are very close to this direction are coldwave, shoegaze, post-hardcore and grunge. Nowadays, many rap artists turn to them and bring out their own vision of this mix. For example, Slowthai on the album “UGLY”.

Cinema – “Mom, we are all seriously ill”

I don’t think you have to go far, you can get what’s in your blood. The band Kino is an excellent example of national musicians who played coldway and post-punk. Their compositions show the influence of The Cure and Joy Division.

Joy Division – “She’s Lost Control”

By the way, about Joy Division. This English band is considered one of the founders of the post-punk genre. “She’s Lost Control” is a great song to make you feel like the hero of the movie “Control”, made about the group by Anton Corbijn. The movie is a must see.

Gang of Four – “Damaged Goods”

Protest group from England. This track has a good cover by Idles, you can also listen to it.

Bauhaus – “Dark Entrances”

A cult English band that, I believe, due to its gothic style, influenced the later development of the Coldwave visual code.

Asylum Match – “Limit”

French representatives of coldwave and post-punk. I like their style: it is a very subtle and precise romantic gothic with distant voices.

Crash course in science: “No more hollow doors”

American band formed in the 80s. There is little information about them, but this track is a diamond in my opinion. There is both post-punk and electro.

Misfits – “She”

The Misfits have never generally been considered post-punk, but this track sounds as close as it gets. That’s why I love it. A cult American punk band whose logo you’ve probably seen often.

DIIV – “Off”

In order not to get tired of old rags, I suggest listening to DIIV’s contemporaries. America too. It is written that the guys play dream pop, but it seems to me that this is nothing like dream pop. Such a soft post-punk with shoegaze and indie.

Yves Tumor – “God is a circle”

Honestly, glamorous rocker Yves Tumor is one of my favorite artists. Besides post-punk, his work is strongly influenced by contemporary experimental music. I advise you to listen to both the first and the latest album. And in general, to study the discography of the labels PAN and WARP, where he is released.

Sonic Youth – “Mildred Pierce”

It’s hard to overestimate the influence of this group on many genres. And yes, it was she who inspired everyone’s favorite Kurt Cobain. Sonic Youth members were one of the founders of shoegaze, but they also have a lot of post-punk. It should be noted that this is a track without vocals, but the energy is insane. By the way, the band is still alive, and their vocalist Kim Gordon recently released an excellent album, mixing spoken word and overdriven rhythms (in the direction of Death Grips, only more listenable).

Heavy Lungs – “Blood Brother”

A modern English band that sounds very canonical. Getting the genre right and relying on the right guidelines.

Dry cleaning – “Scratch Card Lanyard”

A very neat continuation of Sonic Youth (as I see it), also a female spoken word with a distant voice, but in a neater form, suitable for playlists on streaming services. There is no negative connotation here: this is the right approach in 2024.

PS: I also recommend listening to Idles, Fontaines DC, Viagra Boys, Shame, Protomartyr and of course The Cure. And in general, if you dig deeper into this genre, you can find a lot of fascinating things. And if you want to go even deeper, read the book “Break It All Up, Start Over. Postpunk 1978-1984”. The author is Simon Reynolds, who, by the way, coined the term “post-rock”.
