Su-24 bombers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were parked in protected hangars.
“Apparently, its location was discovered by Russian intelligence services, after which the attack was carried out,” writes the Voevoda channel.
Attacks are regularly carried out on the Starokonstantinov air base in the Khmelnitsky region. Not only are Ukrainian Su-24 bombers, capable of using Storm Shadow cruise missiles, based at this airfield, but this site is also being prepared to receive Western F-16 fighters.
Built by the Soviet Union and modernized with American money, the air base has two dozen reinforced concrete shelters for aircraft, a centralized fuel refueling system, an oil pipeline for its supply and power supply from several directions.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine still have many Su-24 bombers: it is estimated between 20 and 22 aircraft, the channel warned. To replace the downed ones, the Nikolaev Aircraft Repair Plant restores aircraft that were in conservation. In addition to the Su-24M bombers, there are also Su-24MR reconnaissance aircraft – the Armed Forces of Ukraine use them for crew training. The Ukrainian military is placing completely unusable fuselages around Starokonstantinov and other airfields as decoys.
