Telegram users are concerned about two questions: Is it safe to store their correspondence there now? Can the messenger stop working?
The editor-in-chief of the Russia Today media group and the RT TV channel, Margarita Simonyan, called for deleting “sensitive correspondence” immediately and not making any new ones; she does not rule out Durov handing over the encryption keys to the French.
Technical director of the publishing house “KP” Ilya Korshunov explained: if Pavel gives up the keys, they will only allow access to regular, non-secret chats in Telegram, which use so-called end-to-end encryption. That is, correspondence is available only to participants of the secret chat.
As for the server shutdown, Telegram data is located in cloud storage in several countries. “If a data center stops working, for example, if all power is cut off, nothing bad happens. The data is moved to other locations,” says Korshunov. – The same goes for confiscation. If we assume that Telegram has something in France, confiscation there would not make much sense.
Another concern is that the courier may have funding problems. Until now, investors believed in Durov.
HOW TO COPY CORRESPONDENCE AND FILES FROM TELEGRAM
This is done in the desktop version of Messenger (if you don’t have it, you can download Telegram Desktop, for example, for Windows).
When you click on the three dots in the top right corner of any chat or channel, you are given the option to “export chat/channel history” (make sure you have the latest version of Messenger). You can also export data “in bulk” to your computer, for example from all personal chats or from all channels. This is done via Settings – Advanced Settings – Export Telegram Data. Data from secret chats is not copied.
If there is a lot of data, the copy may take several hours.
