In more controversial cases, users have reported that they began drinking it as a method of detoxification and weight loss. However, experts warn that internal consumption of castor oil can be harmful to overall health. American nutritionist Ilana Muhlstein told Fox News that she has “never heard of castor oil being used for anything other than its traditional use.”

The Los Angeles-based expert explained that castor oil is primarily used for mild, short-term weight loss because it acts as a laxative. “Laxatives can dehydrate the body and cause addiction,” he said.

Katrina Mattingly, MD, of Chicago, said castor oil is a “tried and true, old-school laxative.” She says it removes not only toxins from the body, but also “important vitamins and minerals like potassium and chloride,” which can cause deficiencies. While castor oil can help with occasional constipation, overuse can cause the intestines to become dependent on laxatives, Mattingly warned, “making self-care difficult.”

The obesity specialist emphasized that she would not recommend castor oil for weight loss in any way. Mattingly recommends rubbing castor oil on your stomach or skin only as a moisturizer, not for weight loss. “Plus, castor oil can have an unforgettable smell,” she warned, “so be prepared for that, especially if you apply it to your face or hair.”
