Super Typhoon Yagi has hit countries in Southeast Asia. According to The Guardian, around a million people in southern China fled their homes and wind speeds reached 234 km/h at times. In the northern Philippines, the catastrophe claimed the lives of 16 people.
Schools, businesses and transport links are closed in Vietnam and Laos, as well as in Hong Kong, Macau and the Chinese province of Guangdong. More than 574,500 people have been evacuated to Guangdong, more than two-thirds of them from the city of Zhanjiang. Two deaths have been reported so far.
Ten years ago, Typhoon Rammasun hit the region, killing 88 people in Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan. Damages amounted to $6.25 billion. And Typhoon Yagi is even stronger.
According to scientists, typhoons have become stronger in recent years due to warming oceans. Last week, Typhoon Shanshan became the strongest to hit Japan in decades.
Local publication Thanh Nien writes that the match between Russia and Thailand could be postponed until Sunday, September 8.
