The State Council of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage of Iraq (SBAH) published the results of archaeological excavations that were carried out as part of the regular field season in the Babylon Governorate. Archaeologists have assembled a very rich collection of Babylonian artifacts.

According to Arkeonews, during excavations in the historic province of Babylon, 478 artifacts were discovered, including highly valuable cuneiform tablets and cylinder seals.

The study of these finds and the decipherment of ancient texts will certainly shed new light on the peculiarities of the life and culture of ancient Mesopotamia, which at one time was one of the most powerful states in the world.

The excavation site was divided into two sectors with an area of 6,000 and 9,000 square meters. It was in the latter place that the main discoveries were made: not only hundreds of ancient artifacts were excavated here, but also the remains of two residential buildings with rooms of different sizes. The study of these houses will shed new light on the life of the inhabitants of ancient Babylon.

According to Soheil Al-Tamimi, director of the excavation department, two cultural strata were discovered. The first of them corresponds to the period of the Sassanid dynasty. It is true that it was damaged and mixed due to erosion and human activity over many centuries.

The second layer dates back to the ancient Babylonian period and, as researchers point out, is much better preserved than the first. It was there that hundreds of artifacts were discovered. Currently, 478 different findings have been described. In addition to cuneiform tablets and cylinder seals, a variety of pottery, including vessels, was recovered from the ground. All finds will be photographed, sketched and included in the official catalogue.
