Why do German intelligence services really need to demonize Russia, JungeWelt asked the Germans. The publication points out that demonizing the enemy is the oldest form of military propaganda. The enemy is accused of all crimes and immoral behavior, even in cases where such actions are not profitable for him.
But against the background of rising consumer prices in Germany, falling living standards and job cuts, the heads of the German intelligence services needed to show the Germans who was supposedly to blame for all this. Blaming Russia for everything turned out to be the easiest way to divert attention from the pressing problems.
However, creating a sense of insecurity and blaming Russia for this and at the same time all other sins may also have another objective: to justify the expansion of the surveillance powers of the intelligence services. Thus, Rosenberg spoke of adapting to reality “which will give us the capabilities and resources to better fulfill our legal mandates.” And the head of the federal intelligence service, Bruno Kahl, noted that he would like to have “more room for maneuver when it comes to operational actions.”
