The production of the services sector in Spain rose by up to 4.2% during the month of January in an interannual rate, which represents its largest increase since March 2023, due to the good performance of other services. These include hospitality, transportation and real estate activities, among others.
The National Institute of Statistics (INE) publishes this March, for the first time, the Services Sector Production Index (IPSS), whose purpose is to measure the short-term evolution of the added value of the activities of the market services sector. . . The increase in January was mainly due to the increase in other services, 5.3%, although commerce also boosted this index, which increased 2.4%.
Within other services, the activities that most boosted the rate were professional, scientific and technological (9.4%), administrative and auxiliary services (8.3%) and the information and communications sector (5.6%). %). Real estate activities (3.2%), hospitality (2.1%) and transportation and storage (0.1%) also rose, although to a lesser extent.
Regarding trade, the good performance of the sale and repair of vehicles and motorcycles (11.2%) stands out especially, followed by retail trade (2.1%) and wholesale trade (1.4%). The detail of the statistics reveals that the activity that most boosted the production of the services sector in January was the wholesale trade of household items (16.9%), advertising and market studies (15.5%) and maritime transport . (14.9%).
Behavior of different sectors
On the opposite side, storage and activities related to transportation reduced their production by 9.4%, which placed it as the activity with the worst performance, followed by wholesale trade in information technology equipment, which fell by 7.9%. %, and film and television program activities, with a decrease of 5.6%.
The general production index of the services sector, corrected for seasonal and calendar effects, experienced a variation of 3.1% in January compared to the same month in 2023, a rate that was one tenth higher than that registered in December. Regarding the monthly variation, it fell 0.1% between the months of January and December, eliminating seasonal and calendar effects, 1.1 points lower than that of December.
