According to Russia’s Federal Customs Service, the animal was found in a car heading to Kazakhstan. Its owner said she would take the lemur to a neighbouring country for breeding, but did not provide the permit paperwork.
The ring-tailed lemur (Catta) is listed in Appendix I of the CITES Convention because it is endangered. To export it from Russia, a CITES export permit is required. It is issued by Rosprirodnadzor.
An administrative case has been initiated. Experts are deciding whether to transfer the lemur to a specialised institution for temporary detention.
