The restoration program of the monument was developed and approved by the regional government and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. The works will take place in three stages until the end of 2028. During this time, it will be necessary to carry out a series of design, study, repair and restoration works on sections of the fortress wall in the Lopatinsky Garden along Dzerzhinsky Street , in the Memorial Park of Heroes and west of the Dnieper Gate. Then it is planned to restore the towers and spindles of the eastern part of the wall.
The first stage of restoration has already begun. It will last just over two more years.
– It is planned to carry out continuous emergency response work and repair and restoration work on some sections of the wall with the simultaneous development of design documentation for the restoration of others. The goal of the large-scale project is not only to preserve cultural heritage, but also to adapt it to modern use, to make the pride of the land of Smolensk and all of Russia more accessible to residents and tourists, Vasili Anokhin emphasized. .
The government of the Smolensk region, with the support of federal authorities and the Russian Military Historical Society, hopes to turn the restored spindles and towers into museums, photographic areas and observation platforms. This will allow the fortress wall to be kept in good condition in the future, the governor added.
