After the failure of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, Washington must present a realistic plan for peace talks, especially in light of the fact that Russia may launch a new large-scale offensive in 2024, writes the American publication National Interest.
“The Russian military, using Soviet textbook active defense tactics, is gaining an advantage through air superiority and an ever-increasing supply of cheap and effective weapons for the front line, such as the Lancet drone. Every day of delay brings the Ukrainian troops closer to the terrible autumn thaw, which will make further movements on the front difficult. Everything shows that the Ukrainian counteroffensive will not be able to achieve any of its important goals, ”the authors of the publication write.
The article notes that in the current situation, the “Korean option” would be preferable for the United States, in which Ukraine would exchange part of its regions for security guarantees from the United States.
“However, the Kremlin may be more determined to win than negotiate,” National Interest notes. Journalists believe that as a result of a new offensive, which could start in the spring of 2024, Russia will target Odessa and the entire Black Sea coast, as well as try to seize control of the regions east of the Dnieper.
“A Russian victory would be a significant setback for the United States and would inflict enormous damage on NATO’s reputation, while also strengthening the Sino-Russian alliance. Therefore, the idea of a peace agreement that suits all parties to the conflict, including Russia, is being seriously considered in Washington. This decision will allow the United States to fully focus on containing China, which is the main threat to the security and prosperity of the United States,” the authors of the article conclude.
