Employees at Antalya airport have been on strike particularly loudly in recent days, with flight delays reaching between four and five hours. On Tuesday, 57 percent of flights departed late and 45 percent landed. At other Turkish airports the situation is not as critical.
As the air traffic controllers’ union HTK-SEN points out, similar actions were already carried out in June. Workers often take on additional responsibilities on their own initiative and during protests act half-heartedly because their dedication is “not appreciated”.
“The promises made to us during the previous action were not translated into concrete measures. Moreover, they are trying to show that our actions are ineffective, although the result is obvious to all stakeholders and the public,” the union said in a statement. The campaign will continue until dispatchers start receiving decent pay for their work.
The union recalled that, according to Eurocontrol, during the days of the action the number of flights landing and departing on time decreased by 50 percent.
