Lately it is rare to see Russian cinema at major foreign festivals. And among winners this almost never happens. However, the last Cannes Film Festival suddenly pleased the Russian public: the main prize was awarded to the film “Anora”, a slightly popular melodrama dedicated to the love of a Russian major and an American stripper.

American director Sean Baker brought many Russian actors into the project: Mark Eidelstein, Daria Ekamasova, Yuri Borisov, Alexei Serebryakov. And the foreign public greeted them warmly. At least in September, a photo of Borisov smiling sweetly at Angelina Jolie herself on the sidelines of the Toronto Film Festival, where “Anora” was also screened, went viral on social media. And now it is known what that conversation was about.
“At the Toronto festival I presented my film and Angelina presented hers,” recalls Borisov. —We were doing different press movements and we crossed paths for a second. She came up and said that she had seen “Anora” and that she really liked the movie.

Recalling the filming of Añora, Borisov noted that the filmmaking process in Hollywood is not much different from work in Russia. Despite the differences in mentality and culture, the actors strutted and captured the common vibe, doing something interesting.
“Anora is a film about people, quite intimate, which requires sensitivity on the part of the filming team,” emphasized the actor. —It would have been the same if it had been filmed in Russia.
