“The King today received the Honourable Sir Keir Starmer MP in audience and asked him to form a new government. Sir Keir accepted Her Majesty’s proposal and kissed her hands in honour of her appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury,” said a statement from the press service of Charles III.
Starmer arrived at Buckingham Palace shortly after Conservative Party leader Rishi Sunak, who lost the election resoundingly, resigned not only from the government but also from his party posts.
At 12:26 local time, Starmer left the British monarch’s residence and headed to 10 Downing Street.
