For the Cruise 2025 collection, Nicolas Ghesquière, who is celebrating 10 years as creative director of Louis Vuitton, chose Antoni Gaudí’s Hypostyle Hall in Park Güell as the location, in an interior with mosaic ceilings, considered the Spanish architect’s hallmark.
As you can imagine, Spain played an important role in this complex and became another starting point in Gheskriere’s travels, in space and time. The designer pointed out that, in addition to Gaudí, artists (Velásquez, Goya, Zurburan) and directors (Luis Banuel and the young screenwriter Rodrigo Sorogoyena) appeared on his mood board. Nicolás has not forgotten an event as important for the brand as the upcoming Copa América in Barcelona, of which LV is the general sponsor.
Ghesquière continued to rewrite the codes of his beloved 80s (note the “inverted triangles”), which this time he mixed with wide-brimmed straw gaucho hats and futuristic mirrored sunglasses. Through the latter, Nicolás makes a forced march called “back to the future.” Also seen here are silk skirts and pants, leather fringes on boots and ankle boots, polka dots and ruffles, clearly reminiscent of flamenco.
Curiously, the collection contained no direct reference to Cristóbal Balenciaga, whose name is most strongly associated with Spanish fashion and whose brand Gescrier led for 15 years. But there was a lot of the designer himself at the time, Balenciaga, and, according to colleagues at Vogue, a deconstructed white skirt was discovered, recreated with wire hooks, in the style of another Spaniard, Paco Rabanne.
